We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bruce Rivera a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bruce, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Establishing the Salvage Arts Foundation is undoubtedly my most meaningful project. As a nonprofit organization dedicated to recycled art, we bring together artists with diverse backgrounds and methods to create artwork from repurposed materials. Our journey began in April 2023 with our inaugural art show, ‘All Decks on Hand,’ showcasing artwork on repurposed skateboard decks by over 80 talented artists.
What sets the Salvage Arts Foundation apart is our commitment to the community. In addition to our art exhibitions, we offer free art classes, workshops, and demonstrations for people of all ages and skill levels. We believe in making art accessible to everyone, fostering creativity, and promoting artistic expression.
Currently, we are eagerly preparing for our upcoming gallery art exhibit, ‘Can’t Stop Here,’ in collaboration with ArtStart NW. This exhibit, featuring artwork on repurposed street signs by over 25 artists, aims to raise awareness about mental health and addiction. By combining art with important social issues, we strive to create thought-provoking experiences that resonate with our audience.

Bruce Rivera is an accomplished artist and the driving force behind the Salvage Arts Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to recycled art. Born and raised in Albuquerque, NM, Bruce’s artistic journey began to unfold when he moved to Arizona, where he established himself as a professional tattoo artist in 2007. His innate talent and passion for art led him to excel in this medium, captivating clients with his unique designs and artistic style.
In 2018, Bruce and his family made a significant move to Seattle, WA, with the opportunity to work at world renowned Slave to the Needle. This transition allowed him to expand his artistic horizons and delve into other forms of creative expression beyond tattooing. When he’s not busy tattooing, Bruce immerses himself in the world of drawing, painting, and sculpting.
Over the years, Bruce has actively participated in numerous exhibitions and art events, gaining recognition for his artistic prowess and distinct style. It was during this time that he felt compelled to give back to the community that had embraced his art so wholeheartedly. In April 2023, Bruce took a leap of faith and fully launched the Salvage Arts Foundation, a nonprofit venture that combines his passion for art with a commitment to sustainability and community engagement.
The Salvage Arts Foundation made an impressive debut with its first art show, ‘All Decks on Hand.’ This exhibition featured artwork on repurposed skateboard decks, showcasing the collaborative efforts of over 80 talented artists. The event was a resounding success, drawing art enthusiasts and supporters from all walks of life. Inspired by this achievement, Bruce and his team have continued their mission to provide the community with free and accessible art classes, workshops, demonstrations, and exhibitions, all centered around the concept of repurposed art.
Looking forward, Bruce’s vision for the Salvage Arts Foundation continues to grow. The upcoming exhibition, in collaboration with ArtStart NW, ‘Can’t Stop Here,’ at Graphite Arts Center in downtown Edmonds, WA is poised to raise awareness about mental health and addiction, tackling these important social issues through the power of art. Bruce firmly believes in the transformative potential of creative expression and aims to create thought-provoking experiences that resonate with the audience and spark conversations.
Salvage Arts is also currently in involved in planning a repurposed snowboard show in 2024 at The Confluence Art Gallery in Twisp, WA as well as an event night at the WNDR Museum in Seattle.
In his quest to make a lasting impact, Bruce Rivera and the Salvage Arts Foundation are always on the lookout for likeminded creative individuals who share their passion for making a difference. What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Teaching art and inspiring younger artists is truly a rewarding experience for me. I wholeheartedly embrace art as a way of life and find joy in sharing that passion with others. My approach to teaching art is centered around making it enjoyable and removing any technical barriers. I firmly believe that there is no wrong way to create art. Unfortunately, many artists become intimidated and discouraged from exploring new avenues of creativity. My goal is to break down those barriers and empower individuals to embrace their unique creative selves.
Through the Salvage Arts Foundation, we aim to foster a supportive and inclusive artistic community. As part of our mission, we will invite diverse teaching artists to share their approaches and methods, ensuring there is something for everyone. These opportunities will be free to the community, fostering an environment devoid of pressure or judgment. Our goal is to inspire and encourage individuals to explore their creativity without limitations, helping them realize the true potential of their artistic abilities.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
One of the best ways to support an artist is by purchasing their artwork! By investing in their creations, you not only provide financial support but also validate their talent and dedication. It’s a meaningful gesture that helps artists sustain their passion and continue their artistic journey.
In addition to buying art, offering words of encouragement can make a significant impact. Artists often pour their emotions and vulnerability into their work, so positive feedback and genuine support can be incredibly uplifting. Taking the time to express appreciation for their art can go a long way in keeping an artist motivated and inspired.
Sharing an artist’s work on social media is another powerful way to support them. By spreading their artwork to a wider audience, you help increase their visibility and potentially attract new admirers. This simple act of sharing can generate exposure and opportunities for artists, enabling them to reach more people and create meaningful connections.
Being mindful of the sensitivity artists may have when putting their work out into the world, it’s essential to approach them with respect and kindness. Recognizing their vulnerability and appreciating their efforts can foster an environment that encourages artists to continue expressing themselves creatively.
By actively participating in their artistic journey, you become an integral part of their success and help ensure a thriving and vibrant art community.
