We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bruce McCall a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bruce, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Growing up i was always inspired by mentors and community programs that kept me active and provided me with structure. I had tons of energy so i knew my mom was glad for the team sports and events i was engaged in weekly. Throughout my school years i always took a liking to coaching and mentoring which led to more opprotunities as i grew older. After highchool i had the opportunity to lead youth programming for The LA County Sheriffs Youth Activities league for over 3 years. This position allowed me to travel and train with many coaches and help underprivelaged kids learn team building through different sports.
During this time i was a Child care worker for a Group home where i was able to supervise and work with the youth daily. This experience made me value the small things because every kids story was different but only desired a safe space and encouragement. I decided to take a break from social services for a moment to look into different workfields and landed in the transportation industry. I applied to be a bus operator for Long Beach Transit and my process moved very quickly. I was challenged with what direction to go but ultimately decided i needed the time to reset from mentoring and coaching. After two years as a bus operator i was promoted to supervisor which was a great opportunity. Being more comfortable in my career i truly started to miss coaching and mentoring. I was not sune what area i wanted to enter but i knew community outreach was at the center of my vision. Urban Reset was created with the vision of providing mentorship, community service and communal events to less fortunate youth/teens. I self funded most of our events and spent long nights trying to make sure that each event ran smoothly. I am dedicated to making sure Urban Reset continues to build community relationships while providing workshops that teach life skills and promote mental health awareness to those in need.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal goes beyond Urban Reset but sheds light on how the community is so much stronger together. I want to inspire the youth to challenge themselves to live and be greater then what the statistics might say. My father always says * God cant fix what
you wont face”. I want to be able to provide a space in the organization that allows the youth and community to have resources and consistent support to families in need.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is when a family tells me how my organization helped them in any way. Knowing that something was done to assit a family in need makes the work i do truly worth it.
