Alright, Bruce thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
Have you ever worked 100% As an entrepreneur that is exactly what you are doing! You don’t get paid for just showing up. You get paid for results. I learned this lesson early when I started a new role with a company as an outside sales representative. That means I had to go to people’s houses and businesses to find the business. I started out as a complete failure. I will teach you what I learned so you can get to Sales Success faster and easier.
I was not a sales superstar. The first month I made ZERO dollars in commissions. In the second month, I racked up a whopping
$7 in commissions. By the end of three months, I made $300 dollars. I wanted to quit. Maybe I should have tried something else. I asked myself is what I am doing not working or if it just not working yet. First I asked for help. I got coaching from a top performer in the company and took notes on what they taught me. Second, I learned about the product and the customer. This increased my ability and my confidence. PRO TIP: never stop learning. Third, and most important; I took massive action. I reached out to 400-500 unique people each week.
I doubled my income in just 2 weeks of these new best practices. The next month I doubled again. Then again. I doubled my commissions 6 months in a row! Life was good. Bills were paid on time and early. I had extra for trips. Sales Success changed my life! My turnaround got the attention of the company president. One of my favorite triumphs. Now I teach entrepreneurs and small businesses how to achieve Sales Success!
Bruce, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I accidentally became an entrepreneur. I was trying to earn a promotion at work. Yes, I had a 9-5. I wasn’t “born” an entrepreneur. They said I didn’t have enough leadership experience. I started supporting Toastmasters members in sales and leadership. Participants in my workshops and training started to win awards. A few got raises and even promotions. One day a student ask me: “How much do I owe you?” When they handed me the cash my life changed. I believe that is the moment I became an entrepreneur. Until that moment I didn’t realize your income is proportionate to the value you add and the problems you solve. One new skill will change your life.
Since then I have narrowed my focus to teaching Sales Success to serviced-based businesses. Helping them hear yes more often without sounding salesy. My ultimate goal is to help them grow their revenue by making sales simple.

What do they have in common? They are service-based businesses, and none of them had any sales experience. Where do I find new clients? Everywhere! Conferences, networking events and workshops. I have started having much more success using social media to make my business easier to find.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
This became so important to me after I started a new job and failed miserably. The first month I made zero dollars in commission. That means I spent 30 days working and not getting paid at all. The next month I made $7 in commission. Ouch. In the third month, I made $300 in commission. $307 in 3 months. That is almost 3 dollars a day on average. Can you imagine how frustrated I felt? I was discouraged; I was afraid. I was running out of time.
Here I am, 90 days into a new job, absolutely failing by any standard. There is no nice way to put it. If I didn’t change something, I was going to be carless, jobless, and homeless. I had to figure out how to hear yes more often. I asked some of the senior sales team where the best zip codes were. I had to find the right people. I asked them how many people they talked to daily to hit their numbers. I had to ask more people. I asked the install team about some of the best-selling items and why. I had to learn to ask better questions. Sometimes people weren’t home. So I made a plan/schedule to go back. I had to ask more often. Everyone I talked to, new customer or flat no, I asked them for two referrals. I tripled the first 90 days that month. Then I doubled it. Then I doubled it again. I doubled it one more time. I increased every month up until I left that role.
