We were lucky to catch up with Bruce Cunningham recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bruce, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew I wanted to be an actor and a director in 1985. I watched Barry Gordy’s “The Last Dragon” & Ridley Scott’s “Legend
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Bruce Carlton Cunningham Jr. has been a prolific filmmaker for the past 23 years. Born and raised in St. Louis, MO, Cunningham began producing short films at 20 years old as a college student. After graduating, he went on to produce and act in several shorts and theatrical productions for the church he attended. In 2013, he decided to take his acting and filmmaking career to another level. Cunningham wrote, produced, directed and starred in the short film, Ricky’s Hurt (2016). He also appeared in Retribution (2015), Static: A Fan Film (2018), Icon: A Fan Film (2020), a web series, Gonzo (2016), two feature films, A New Husband For Christmas (2020) and Underneath (2024).
UN-RESOLVED is the debut independent feature film of Cunningham, who wrote, self produced and raised the capitol to finance this project. Taking on all major crew roles throughout production, including lead actor and editor, this movie is complete and now streaming.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
My first feature film started as a short film in 2007 followed by a short sequel in 2008. In 2014, I tried to continue story with another and longer short film, failing miserably. I went back to the drawing board and started to write feature length screen plays that were in my head. In 2016, I turned the this story from a short to a feature length screen play. In March 2017, we had auditions and went into production in June 2017.
Within that time frame, there were some set backs including the main actress injuring herself on her job. That set production back 6 months. We didn’t officially wrap production until March 2019.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew the business side of filmmaking and marketing.
