We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bruce Borgos. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bruce below.
Bruce, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
So many ways to measure success, right? I used to think that. What I’ve come to realize since I started writing full-time, is that more than anything it takes pure determination to be successful. It doesn’t matter what you are attempting to do. Success requires the WILL to achieve. That means putting in the hours, practicing every day. Whether you aspire to be a painter, a basketball player, a writer, or anything else, you have to do the time. You have to learn every day. Most of all, you have to have the desire to discover how good you can be. It sounds easy when you say, but it’s anything but easy. The trick is finding that “thing” that you simply cannot feel fulfilled without.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a writer. I’ve always been a writer, though I spent many years doing other things professionally. Like a lot of people with creative pursuits, I dabbled in my craft when time permitted. I paid the bills with the idea always firmly in my head that there would come a time when I could pick up my pen and do what I was made to do. I’ve met so many good writers along the way, many of them in those places I’ve been so many times, unable to devote all their attention to their craft. I’ve seen many surrender, convincing themselves that they aren’t good enough. But I have always believed that I could make myself into anything I wanted to be.
I’m incredibly proud of the work I’ve done, what I’ve achieved. Five published novels to date and more to come. There is no better feeling, no greater satisfaction for me, than creating an entire world from scratch, populating it with interesting characters, and telling a story that moves readers to laughter and tears. If I died today, it would be with that sense of accomplishment!

Have you ever had to pivot?
Absolutely. I was working in the “real world” in 2020 when Covid broke out. My company went through some restructuring, and I was suddenly out of work. People everywhere were losing jobs. No one was hiring. I decided to see this as an opportunity rather than a setback. I’d been working on my third novel as time permitted but wasn’t getting very far. Once I decided to give it my full attention, I worked through five drafts in six months. Armed with what I believed was a great story, I took a run at finding a literary agent to represent me. I spent a lot of time – and a little bit of money – learning the ins-and-outs of how to do this. And I had some very quick success. By the end of 2020, I had signed with my first agent. She sold my book just five months later! The pivot paid off :)

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to write a novel every year until I die. Now you might think this shouldn’t be all that difficult, given that I’m doing this now. But writing a novel can be excruciating work at times. Someone once said it’s like trying to row a bathtub across the North Atlantic! It brings me such joy, though, that I don’t ever want to stop. Hopefully, my readers will continue their support, and we can have this conversation again when I’m 90!
