We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Courtney Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Courtney below.
BrownBone, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
When you are down to your last and you have a ton on things you feel like you need to do and you still choose to invest in your dream.. That’s taking a risk and betting on yourself. I always will bet on me because i know I’m not alone with God.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is BrownBone and i was influenced heavily into being an artist from watching my older brother make music and growing up watching 106 and park. The music videos always made me feel like time was paused and i was in the video somehow. Music has been my therapy and helped me through alot of situations. I’ve always loved music and it was something that i knew i was good at!
I started calling myself BrownBone because growing up there was always songs on the radio constantly BEATING YOU IN THE HEAD talking about “redbones” or “yellowbones.” Girls my skin color always had it harder in everything and that alone made me love myself even harder. I didn’t understand fully being younger but colorism is something that i’ve experienced in my life. The name BrownBone reflects solely on my love for the skin i’m in and though i would never take away from anybody else i always want to make sure that little girls across the world that look like ME know that they are and will ALWAYS be THAT GIRL! Always love the skin you are in.
I am most proud of my ability to still love what i do and always make time to be creative with all the trials and tribulations that life throws at me. I often use experiences to help me write alot of my music. I make sure to remain my most authentic self when doing so!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Something that drives me to be more creative and hustle non-stop is the love that i have for my son and daughter. I’m always grateful for everything that i have but i never let myself get content to the point that i don’t want more. This journey that I am taking is not just about me, it has everything to do with my loved ones as well. I want to be able to generate generational wealth. That’s a big thing for me being that i lost my mother at 24.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I feel like the most rewarding part is being on stage and hearing people scream your song lyrics back to you. When someone knows your music word for word and it’s something that YOU wrote based on how you felt at that moment in time, it’s literally enough to make you smile and wanna shed tears of joy. I love everybody who supports me all over the world. The fact that they take the time out to listen to my music is super special to me because they are why i keep going.
