We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brother Prater. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brother below.
Alright, Brother thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Early January 2019, my sister Sheila Prater told me that she wanted to create an organization to help victims of Domestic Violence. I told her that I would indeed help her create the organization, write a book & create several Domestic Violence Awareness events to bring others together to discuss such a sensitive topic. 2 months later, Sheila was killed as a result of Domestic Violence. At that moment, I vowed to work extremely hard to make sure that all of Sheila’s desires were fulfilled in her honor .

Brother, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord & Savior as a young boy. I am a proud father of one son & is the 3rd of 5 children of my parents’ children. I am a minister, musician, public speaker, author & the host of a weekly podcast called ReConnect My Heart Podcast. I have recorded sermons & devotions on popular social media outlets address many important topics of life, including matters of the heart.
I have been a leader in public service for nearly 34 years, including more than 31 years in law enforcement. I’m a firm believer in teaching the power of prayer & the importance of studying God’s Word about every situation.
Out of all of my responsibilities, I’m most proud of being a father to my 19 year old son, Dillon. He has been a joy to his life & has given me the inspiration to become the man I am today.
Sadly, on March 3, 2019, my only sister Sheila Prater was killed due to Domestic Violence. At that moment, I vowed to make Domestic Violence & Toxic Relationships Awareness an important topic within my ministry to help others & to honor the memory of Sheila.
The main thought that I wants people to know: Inspite of what challenges you face in life, God is (More than able) to help you face or overcome it to help others along the way.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Days after the murder of my sister Sheila, I had to return to work knowing that the person arrested for killing my sister was in the same jail that I worked. I relied on God’s strength to continue to work while encouraging others, inspite of my painful loss.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
The 2 quotes (or advices) my dad would always say that stuck with me were:
1) A wise man learns from his mistakes, but a wiser man learns from other people’s mistakes. (Keep your eyes & ears open to wisdom, so you could avoid mistakes that other folks made.
2) Save a dry stick for a wet day!
(Don’t be so quick to spend all your money. Pray & ask God (if this is something that is needed) to help you get the best price of the best product in the best time). in other words, SAVE YOUR MONEY!
3) If you put God 1st & take care of His business, He’ll take care of your business!
