We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brooks Crittenton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brooks, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned how to write poetry in 9th grade at my high school High Tech High Media Arts from my teacher Diana Sanchez. A lot of my poems come from life experiences. I’ve learned being observant is an important skill to have as a poet/storyteller. A huge obstacle I had to overcome, was listening to others doubts about what I should do about writing.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Brooks Crittenton. The name Poetry was given to me after I graduated high school. I’ve been writing ever since I knew how to hold a pencil but I became published in April 2020. Mrs. Julia Royston heard my poetry and decided to publish my works. Since then I’ve published multiple poetry books, short stories and a novella. Recently I won The Las Vegas Black Music Awards in 2024. It was the first year they opened a selection for spoken word artist. I am most proud that my first two volumes were placed in a black history museum, Wynn’s Legacy House in East Point, Ga by Mrs. Wynn herself. What I offer is deep relatable poems and powerful storytelling. My books include
Poetry’s Poesy Vol. 1 and 2 “Scattered Thoughts” and “Scattered Prayers”. My short stories is called T.R.P Series “The City of Gold” and “Christmas”. My newest novella is called “The Omitted Tribe Stories” ‘Sheol’. All these projects were published by Royal Media Publishing. While living in Las Vegas Elle Hope gave me an opportunity to be a part of The Spotlight Anthology “The Young Gited and Black Vol. 1-3.”
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being a creative is creating worlds and being free to live in your craft.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
What drives me most in my creative journey is to be one of the greats like the one’s before me such as William Shakespeare, Dante, Langston Hughes, and Maya Angleou. Would love to be remembered for my poems and storytelling.
