We recently connected with Brooks Betts and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brooks, thanks for joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I spent 15+ years working in the Marketing + Media industry, at big publishing brands like Real Simple, Health, Travel + Leisure and Food & Wine as well as on the agency and brand side. It was a career I was proud of and had success with, I learned so much and met so many amazing people. It was fast-paced and high stress, an energy that fueled my twenties in NYC, but not my transition to motherhood and relocation to the burbs. But what did I do? I just worked harder, wearing my burnout and “busy” as a badge of honor.
The turning point in my life – and career – was the birth of my kids, We welcomed Nolan in 2013 but the game really changed when twins Connor + Cece joined us in 2016.
I wanted to go back to work in some capacity, but I knew what I was doing was not in alignment. I went back to my job part time and started a freelance business, thinking it would give me more flexibility. What that gave me was the false pretense I could do it all – I was now available for preschool drop offs and afternoon play dates, but that meant I was getting my work done late nights and weekends.
Not surprisingly, it caught up to me. My body started screaming and physical and mental health challenges were flaring up. I found myself seeking new systems of self-understanding – diving into topics like astrology, energy healing and tarot…and I (finally) started meditating. Covid-19 hit and that kind of turned up the volume on this work for me, and led me to reconnecting with my intuitive gifts, cultivating mindfulness practices and tapping into a level of awareness that has since shifted my entire world.
Brooks, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Under the umbrella of Brooks Betts, LLC I have a variety of offerings – and I’m proud of these offerings because I know I bring a uniquely grounded approach to them. While I’ll admit I love to get lost in the intuitive work (hello Pisces Sun!), my feet are very much on the ground here (thank you, Capricorn Rising), which makes me relatable as a practitioner and means my offerings translate in real, every day life.
I offer Reiki healing sessions, breathwork + meditation classes, community + corporate group events and an intuitive mentorship. All of these offerings are available in-person (Fairfield County, CT), virtually and in either 1:1 or group formats. I love working 1:1 with people, but also find it so rewarding to work with corporate teams, introducing the concept that intuition has a role in the workplace can create big shifts. I have a few virtual workshops coming up with companies that I’m really excited about!
The hardest part of this business has been being vulnerable and putting myself out there. I continue to battle imposter syndrome and “what will they think” thoughts, but since I launched I’ve felt a lot of flow – support, opportunities and momentum that I couldn’t have created if I tried. This is a key differentiator to how I’d define the first chapter of my career in marketing, which was full of force and void of pretty much all flow. I’m grateful for all I learned during that phase of my career though – both in terms of skillset and relationships, as well as work ethic and accountability. I’ve seen firsthand that the magic happens at that intersection of force + flow, or masculine + feminine, and that’s a lesson I love to share with my clients.
We’re taught that work should be hard, and that if we’re not exhausted we’re not doing it right. I too believed that for a long time, but I’m here on the other side to tell you there is another way – you just have to be brave enough to listen to your intuition, which means deciphering what’s meant for you vs. what others expect of you.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
It’s funny because I have a marketing background – and I love nothing more than helping other entrepreneurs launch + grow, but I have a hard time getting out of my own way when it comes to marketing myself! I have never loved the spotlight, so putting myself out there and doing the things I know I need to do is something I am working on.
What’s been most effective is offering a blend of group workshops and 1:1 sessions. I’ve found people I meet in either format tend to be interested in the other and vise versa. So I’ve gotten to work with people in both ways, and from there experienced positive benefits of their word-of-mouth referrals.
Another avenue that has been wonderful is partnerships with other local businesses. There’s nothing better than finding synergies between brands, businesses and the women that run them!
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Practice what you preach! Learning and knowledge seeking is great, but you’ve got to take the time to embody what you’re teaching to others. Even with strong boundaries, energy work and holding space for others can be exhausting, so it’s important to build in time to rest.
