We were lucky to catch up with Brooklyn Kelly recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brooklyn, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I believe the greatest risk I’ve taken/continue to take is prioritizing myself. As a creative it is extremely normal to feel the immense pressure to conform to society and listen to people outside of oneself. When I’ve prioritized myself, I’ve found that I have made unconventional choices. However, those choices are what was necessary for me to continue on my personal path/journey and they were essential for my growth.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born in Santa Clara, CA and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. I discovered my passion for music at a young age. My journey began with singing in a musical theater summer camp, where I learned to nurture my innate talent and lay the foundation for my future as a performer and an artist. In theater, I was able to create a character for myself and also create my own rendition of the characters I’ve played. After finding my passion for performing in middle school, I continued my passion for theater and performing throughout high school and college. I think that performing arts all have a hand in creating some of the greatest performers throughout history, therefore I challenged myself to be a multi-hyphenate performer and creative!
After graduating from Loyola Marymount University, I began to focus on writing my own music as I finally had the time to give my undivided attention to it. For my upcoming projects, I drew inspiration from a myriad of influences, from classic R&B legends to contemporary pop icons. My distinct sound combines velvety-smooth vocals with infectious rhythms, creating an irresistible sound that resonates with music lovers across generations. As I prepare to embark on my musical journey, I have an arsenal of original songs that I hope will reach the right audience and inspire people to find solitude in themselves and embark on their own healing journeys.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
One of my many goals is to create an organization where a group of creatives and I can create an arts program in underprivileged communities and schools. I had my start in the theater during my middle school and high school years, and if I hadn’t had that opportunity I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I have experience working with children in theater camps and I’ve witnessed first hand what magic can from giving a child the space to create and express themselves.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is knowing that I have impacted my audience in the best ways. I look forward to receiving random DMs and comments from people that I don’t know who express that my music/content has had a positive impact on their lives and inspires them to step into the direction of their dreams.
