We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brooke Latham. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brooke below.
Brooke, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
We all know that technological development has a sort of snowball effect, so in the world of digital marketing this means things move at a pretty rapid pace. Algorithms are constantly evolving, new spaces are opening up, and certain practices are quickly becoming outdated. But the biggest question mark right now is the rise of AI and the impact it might have on a lot of industries, especially the world of content creation.
I think it’s pretty clear that AI is a groundbreaking technology with infinite applications. No doubt, it’s here to stay. That said, it is in an extremely infantile state. AI is not currently capable of doing what humans can do.
Needless to say, as a digital marketing expert, I have played around with the technology in order to deepen my understanding of the trend. There are so many platforms out there, most famous of all, ChatGPT. I’ve actually spent many many hours investigating, seeing to what extent these tools are a threat to humans in the industry, or a potentially useful device. My conclusion is that AI can certainly provide a jumping off point, but even that is tricky. The second people start relying on AI to generate that ‘rough draft’ content, then they immediately sacrifice some of their critical thinking skills. When editing something that AI has created, we don’t really think for ourselves as much as we would in the instance of starting from scratch. This means that we only see what is in front of us, and the truth is that AI is still deeply flawed.
AI has a long way to go before becoming a truly useful device in the world of digital marketing, but it’s certainly a trend I’m keeping my eye on. Working in the digital sphere, I happily embrace new technologies that are tried and proven. Trying to ignore or avoid that change is simply a denial of the reality we’re living in. However, it’s extremely important to be cautious and mindful when jumping on board with trends, or adopting new processes. The future is in our hands, and we shouldn’t take that responsibility lightly.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a marketing strategist, I am passionate about helping business owners grow their brands by creating comprehensive sales funnels designed to attract, convert and retain their ideal clients. My business, Social Canvas, is a full-service marketing agency specializing in working with organizations of purpose.
Several years ago, I quit my job in the art world with no idea of what I wanted to do. I only knew that I was lacking fulfillment, and needed to find my calling. After my last day at work, I flew to Japan on a one-way ticket to climb Mount Fuji with a girl I’d never met. This was the most transformative hike of my life. I learned of the Japanese concept, Ikigai, which is meant to serve as a guide for life’s purpose. It outlines the four components necessary for finding your purpose: what you love doing, what you’re good at, what you can make money doing, and what the world needs. Suddenly, it just clicked. So, I mapped out a plan to create a career for myself with all of these elements, and started Social Canvas to use my marketing superpowers to help purpose-driven brands get the recognition and success they deserve.
At Social Canvas, we offer a variety of services, from social media and email marketing to paid ads and thought leadership, to name a few. Our holistic strategy is tailored to each of our clients unique goals and needs, with a highly-personalized approach.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
As I always say, a happy customer is your best marketing strategy. Word of mouth is always a really effective means of bringing in new clients. At Social Canvas, we have many long-standing clients who have been with us for years. When clients are satisfied, they are more likely to recommend your business to their friends, family, and acquaintances. We are so lucky to have such wonderful clients and to receive so many referrals. This concept can apply to many industries, especially those that are service-based.
That said, building a comprehensive sales funnel is of course is a necessary step in setting up the long-term sustainability of your brand. Marketing is a never-ending process, but when done effectively, it pays for itself.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Anyone who has tried their hand at entrepreneurship knows that it can be a wild ride. The highs are high, but the low are oh so low. One minute you’re on top of the world, and the next everything feels like its crashing down. Personally, that is one of the things I love most about this path. It keeps you on your toes.
In my five years of building Social Canvas from the ground up, my resilience has been put to the test time and time again. It makes me think back to my rodeo days during my Texas-based youth. When the horse bucks you off, you get right back on. You don’t hesitate, but you do learn from your mistakes.
