Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brooke Johnson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Brooke thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Ever since I was a kid I have loved being in front of the camera, posing and creating art through photos has always been an interest of mine. I grew up being a cheerleader and never really thought much about getting into modeling. It had briefly crossed my mind at times when my mom would tell me stories about her days of being in pageants, but I never acted on it until around April of 2021, which was just last year. One of my best friends, Brooke Dorough, moved across the country to Florida our freshman year of college to pursue makeup school. I stayed in Michigan and started my first year at Grand Valley State University where I am still attending school now. That year when Brooke and I were both home for Christmas break, she used me as a model for her school makeup portfolio, and she created a few different looks that we shot in her bedroom. As we were going through the photos on her laptop, Brooke was telling me that I should get into modeling, as she had been working with models in Florida for various different school projects and thought that I would be a perfect fit for it. I gave it some thought, and decided why not give it a shot. I am so thankful that I did, and can not believe that I have already been able to experience so much. I continue to become more excited everyday to see where this journey will take me!
Brooke, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up in Brighton which is a town on the eastside of Michigan, just north of Ann Arbor. I graduated from Brighton High School in 2021, and I am currently in my second year of college on the westside of Michigan at Grand Valley State University. I am an undergraduate student studying multimedia journalism full time, as well as working to pursue my career in modeling. I began my journey in this industry last year searching for agencies and taking digitals to submit. I have since been signed with agencies in Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Miami. I am so grateful for all the opportunities I have gotten, and for the people I have met along the way! Something I am most proud of would be my persistence and drive to develop a career in the modeling field while also working to obtain a college degree. I hope to one day be able to travel internationally doing what I love, and help creative artists bring their visions to life.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being a model is seeing the final vision of artists and creatives come to life, and being able to be a part of that. Getting to be the face for a cool makeup look, wearing beautiful clothes crafted by amazing designers, or even just posing for the right shot is so awesome, because there are so many different artists’ perspectives that go into those kinds of things, and seeing it all come to life is really cool. Knowing that I was a part of someone’s vision and that journey is definitely a very unique and rewarding feeling.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
This is an industry that is known to be very stereotypical and biased. I love to see the recent inclusion and diversity that has been shown through the media, and I hope to continue seeing this and also hope that more of it is implemented in the industry. I think that being supportive and inclusive to everyone helps the industry grow more powerful and unique. Society’s support for creatives and artists, as well as support for each other within the industry itself, is crucial for creating a thriving workplace with successful creations.
