We were lucky to catch up with Brooke Hoffert recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brooke, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
All of my projects are extremely meaningful to me, but I would say the most meaningful project I’ve worked on recently was my exhibition titled “Queer Futurity,” shown at Zeitgeist Gallery in Nashville, Tennessee. The exhibition explored the concept of utopianism and queerness. The show featured three incredible artists, Bridget Bailey, Rae Yo Young, and Veronica Leto. This exhibition was significant to me because getting to partner with Zeitgeist, which I’ve been going to for years, was a tremendous accomplishment for me and cemented the fact that I can have a career as a curator working independently.
Brooke, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an independent curator and writer based in Nashville, Tennessee, specializing in LGBTQ+ visual and performing arts. I hold a master’s degree in History of Art from University College London, in London, England. Inspired and intrigued by the depths of queerness, I explore themes of love, utopianism, trauma, and queer identity through writings and exhibitions. I started FEMME in 2022 to explore the vast community of queer artists in the United States South. I am a contributing writer for Floorr Magazine, an artist-run, London-based publication spotlighting emerging and established creatives. I am also a contributing writer and board member of Number, the premier arts journal of the south, for over 36 years. My curatorial practice goal is to create a space where inclusivity, connectivity, and thought-provoking art can thrive.
FEMME hosts monthly exhibitions, solely highlighting queer artists. We do artist interviews and spotlight queer creatives internationally.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing for me is being able to help artists. I love looking through portfolios and assisting artists in navigating the art world. It is gratifying seeing artists succeed. I also love seeing others enjoy the exhibitions I curate and view different ideas and views in life.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
We can create a thriving creative ecosystem by supporting artists in any way you can. Buy art from local artists. Attend art openings and mixers, and like and share their artwork on social media. I want young people to get into buying art. Starting an art collection is a great way to support creatives while allowing yourself to be surrounded by beautiful things.
