We were lucky to catch up with Brooke Fish recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brooke, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
I got into Interiors through playdates with my other mom friends and their kiddos. Ten years later, I’m still serving the families who would never hire an interior designer, but know their house could benefit from a little help. They just don’t know where to start. I have several clients who tell me, “I love that you don’t have a minimum budget and use what I already have in my home.”
I truly believe that everyone is worthy of beauty and the home is a sacred space where that beauty can begin. You don’t have to follow the trends or spend thousands of dollars to have a beautiful home. Your home should reflect you and what you love; it tells your story. The meaningful pieces in my client’s homes are the foundation for my designs, not what Target or Social Media says is cool.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As I said earlier, I started working in interiors by moving things around in my friends’ homes. I mean, practice on those who are close, right? ha ha ha.
I quickly noticed a void in interiors; lots of people really want their homes to look better but don’t know where to start and most can’t afford an interior designer. I wanted to make having a beautiful home accessible to everyone. This started with me offering clients my decoration services using what they already had in their homes. That quickly morphed into, “If there’s something I need, like a lamp or a different table, please let me know and I will go get that.” From there I added mood boards and item links to various products for my clients to add to their home design. I love this offering because it provides flexibility for my clients. If they want to DIY everything they can, but if they want more help, I can come in and style everything for them making the most of their layout and purchases.
So now, I do everything from shopping and styling for my clients to designing from the ground up on remodels. Not only does this truly help my clients by being able to really meet their needs, but I get to focus on all different aspects of design. I love shopping vintage, resale, estates for my clients to offer them unique pieces, but I also love helping them choose the perfect light fixture that will set the ambiance for their entire kitchen remodel
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
In typical DIY fashion, I like to be very hands on and do things myself. When it comes to my business, I am quickly learning that it is OK to ask for help and to seek wisdom from others in area where I do not excel. An example of this is Social Media. I stink at social media. I do NOT want to promote myself and definitely don’t want my face all over the place. My business is about what I do for my clients, not me. And yet, I still need to promote my work and be where others are – Instagram, Facebook, etc.
I recently worked on a home remodel with a client who is a Social Media Manager and we did a trade of services. She’s teaching me all the Social Media things I never wanted to learn, but are helping me reach new clients and grow my business. At the end of the day it’s about helping others and if I can help more people by being on Social Media then that’s what I going to do.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Oh my gosh, yes! When I see colors, art, or beautiful homes it evokes a feeling of joy, creativity, excitement, and freedom! For others it can be paralyzing and confining; that makes me so sad. When I walk into a client’s home I never judge! I look for the highlights, the best parts that can be brought center stage and be the starting ground for a space that is truly amazing for them. At the end of the day it’s not about my style, it’s about my clients, their style and how I can optimize that in their homes. The end product is always a space that my clients love, allowing them to entertain family and friends, if that’s their jam, or just decompress and feel peace. That is a job worth doing!
