We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brooke Curry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brooke , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
After 2 years of working at a salon and a new budding bridal hair business in Baltimore, my husband and I decided to hit the road, and take our Careers with us. My husband is a travel nurse, and our first assignment was Taos New Mexico! What a cool place! I reached out to every person I could to start booking work and landed a gig doing hair and makeup for a Photoshoot with a local boutique. I ended up booking 2 more brides over that 3 month stint. Hawaii was our next move, and that’s where things really started to take off! I scoured the internet looking for wedding vendors to connect with, and finally found the most amazing company that booked people like me work! Within a week of being on Oahu I had my dream job. I started doing weddings every single day at the most beautiful hotels and resorts in Hawaii! This really went up hill from there. I went from local Baltimore bridal hair stylist to destination bridal hairstylist . Over the past 8 years I have lived and worked in Maryland, New Mexico, Georgia, Florida, Hawaii, and Arizona. It’s always a bit of a challenge finding work, but it always works out! I’m grateful to the bridal companies that keep my schedule full while also respecting my crazy lifestyle. These days I offer hairstyling only. I’m a bit more settled in, currently snowbirding between Maryland and south Florida, and fully book myself with weddings in both places all year long. I love what I do. I love my brides, and I love the people, vendors, and friends I get to work with. I love the freedom aspect of working for myself. Did I mention I love what I do?

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi! My name is Brooke Curry! I am a destination bridal hairstylist, and licensed cosmetologist . My husband and I have been traveling together for 9 years. He is a travel nurse. We typically travel to a new place every 3-6 months. Just enough time to work and play. We’ve slowed down a bit, and now move just twice a year living between Maryland and Florida and serving brides full time in both places seasonally. I’ve been doing hair for 11 years and I love every second of it. Bridal hair and updo styling has been my niche since hair school. I I create timeless, chic bridal hair art, while also crafting the perfect schedule and vibe for all things weddings! I’ve learned so much over the last 11 years of doing bridal hair which has really helped me perfect not only my art, but the over all experience I provide. Making women feel beautiful is my favorite thing in the entire universe. I’m so incredibly lucky to live this dream.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
For me the best source of new clients is connecting with vendors. Usually if I hit it off with another vendor, chances are their brides are my kind of brides too! I’m so lucky to be in such a supportive industry. We all really do take care of each other. I have so many vendors turned friends looking out for me, and I couldn’t be more appreciative.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Being the right brained creative that I am, I really had to push myself to learn the more organized tech side of the business. I still have so much to learn honestly, but Implementing contracts, and a bit more structure to my policies and prices have kept me safe and on track! I am a better person when I have my ducks in a row. Eventually my goal is to forward all business logistics to an assistant, and totally stay in the creative space. A girl can dream!
