We were lucky to catch up with Brooke Boltz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brooke, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to start your own firm or do you wish you had started sooner?
Yes, I wish I had started my firm sooner. The firm grows each year, so if I had started sooner, it would have had more years to grow by this point in my career. That said, I value my prior experience because it taught me the legal and managerial skills I now employ in my current practice. I was mentored by an exceptional trial lawyer at my prior firm and I could not have had that experience at my own firm.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
After college, my first job was as a probation officer. That led to another position in the criminal justice system called a Pretrial Services officer. In both of those positions, I was in the courtroom regularly. As a probation and pretrial services officer, I was required to be neutral but I found myself wanting to be an advocate and argue a position. That experience led me to apply for law school.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
The success of my firm is largely dependent upon having high quality staff. I make it a high priority to do everything I can to make a stressful career as enjoyable as it can be for my employees. I give raises whenever I feel someone is deserving of one. I do mid-year and end-of-the year activities or events. When a new employee is hired, we have a firm-wide lunch to welcome them. Maybe most importantly, I do not overload the staff with an impossible workload. When I notice that a high performing employee is starting to make errors, I know that it is time to hire someone to help.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
What funding? I had always read and heard that you needed to have six figures in savings or funding before starting a law firm. I had nothing remotely close to that but thankfully, my business was blessed from the outset and is currently debt free.
