We recently connected with Bronson Kurtz and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Bronson thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
My very first client was a medical practice. I was referred to them by one of their employees, who I had been helping with IT support in his home for about a year.
My first few meetings with the medical practice were more about the relationship. Over the next year and a half I worked to help them with their IT problems basically voluntarily. Looking back I guess it was a long job interview, because one night, out of the blue they contacted me and asked to hire me.
I couldn’t believe it was happening! I was proud to know I had done a good job, and I had built enough trust with them to want to hire me. We started slowly, they dedicated one project to me–one shot to build my business with a client who could propel it forward. I took on the challenge and proved, to myself and them, that I could do it, and do it well!
When that project was finished, I took over the whole business. All three locations and 75 people were under my domain. After securing their account I continued to gain experience and take on more clients. They were patient with me, and were the catalyst for me starting the successful business I run today.
One of my takeaways from this experience is that we are all connected. Our success very often depends on other people putting their trust in us—the opportunities that do come along we have to treat as a treasure. We don’t get very many second chances.
I have taken this model in myself and given others chances—a chance to learn, gain experience, and to grow. I like to hire local small businesses to provide that for them. I always want to pay that forward.

Bronson, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Very simply put we are an IT company. Our designation is an MSSP which means Managed Service and Security provider. Our company manages the technology, the computers, the backups and help desks for businesses.
We manage thousands of users and help them meet HIPAA, FEDERAL compliance such as CMMC, and financial compliance like PCI compliance. In the world of IT, many of the solutions that different companies offer are the same. What makes us different is how we communicate and how we organize technology.
I personally act as CTO providing meaningful consultation and ambassadorship for small businesses. My first objective is to share and solve tech problems with the business owner mindset. I have the personal skill to simplify complicated things.
I view much of the technology struggles businesses face like an unfinished puzzle. My role is to assemble the puzzle pieces to make them understandable. Puzzles are stressful and chaotic when lying in a pile; they make no sense. They are beautiful and easy to recognize when they are finally put together. A good IT company can do that quickly and simply.
I also have a significant background in construction, so it is effortless for us to deploy technology and provide support in the construction industry. In the world of IT, many of the solutions that different companies offer are the same. What makes us different is how we communicate and how we organize technology.
We are also very connected to our community. I am well-known in my community, and I stand proud by the work we do. Sometimes that means community service and community support.
For example, during COVID 19, schools were forced to go to remote learning. A lot of families weren’t ready for this.
Parents were struggling with technology and continuing their kids’ education through such a hard time. We launched free IT support for parents and teachers for several months to help them learn and work remotely.
It was significantly gratifying for us to be able to help. Unforeseeably, this has also been paid forward, as some of the parents we helped have turned into loyal clients a year later.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
When starting my business, I wanted to personalize the approach to technology, hence the name Personalized Technology Services. As a people person, I wanted to bridge the gap between technology and humans.
In the beginning, having a personalized approach to IT, and combining that with my personality, meant I was very reachable. This is uncommon in the IT business.
I was able to communicate very complicated ideas in simple ways that people could understand. This created my brand of Personal Technology Services.
People ended up hiring me–the person. As I grew and my business grew, this became a problem for me. They wanted to work with me, but not my employees. So, I had to rebrand myself to current clients and future clients. I wanted them to understand that it wasn’t just me that they were hiring, but my company.
I am part of a team of people. My team has systems and processes in place for how we work. So now, when people hire me, they know they are hiring my company. All of us are dependable, and all of us are reachable. I don’t ever want to be so big that people can’t reach me.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the most recent pivots is a brand identity between:me, the owner of an IT company, and me, the professional photographer. Sometimes I do so much photography in my community I am better known as the photographer, and less for owning an IT business.
I’ve had to change the way I present myself in my community. Sometimes this means I have to say no to my photography hobby. That way, my brand identity can shine more brightly as the owner of an IT company.
One of the more significant changes in my life, which affects me personally and in business, is adopting the mindset that I’m wrong about everything. As scary as this sounds, it allows me to have a mindset that is ready to change, grow, and accept new ways of looking at things.
Being willing to be wrong is an exercise in humility. If you’re willing to be humbly wrong, you can improve your business and personal life. So now I am confidently wrong, and confidently ready to learn, which gives me such a sense of freedom.
