We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bron Hansboro. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bron below.
Hi Bron, thanks for joining us today. How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? The world needs to hear more realistic, actionable stories about this critical part of the business building journey. Tell us your scaling up story – bring us along so we can understand what it was like making the decisions you had, implementing the strategies/tactics etc.
Being a small business owner I’ve always heard conversations surrounding business growth opportunities. As The Flower Guy Bron navigated its first few years, I based my businesses success on performance compared to the previous year. However, as we matured I learned the major difference between growth and scaling and scaling became my major focus.
Our first large scaling opportunity happened during Covid-19 Pandemic when a lighting vendor approached me about purchasing his business. We worked out the details and ultimately, the acquisition instantly increased revenue, added value to existing services, but better didn’t require much effort on me and my team since the business was fully operational with its own experienced team.
Since this moment we have developed multiple new streams of income that are adjacent to San support, but not dependent on the The Flower Guy Bron
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Bron Hansboro and never in a million years had I imagined I would be a professional in the wedding and event industry. However, Its no surprise at all that I gravitated to the hospitality field. During my undergraduate experience I was exposed to fresh flowers as a luxury by a friend who was in the industry and was bitten by the hospitality bug. My first taste of was born simply out of preparing fresh floral arrangements for family and friends as gifts on special occasions. This grew into always having fresh flowers in our home for guests to enjoy. Over the next couple of years I became synonymous with bringing the gift of flowers. My first wedding was randomly dropped into my lap after running into my high school prom date in a department store. While catching up, I shared that I had interest in designing flowers. Without hesitation she suggested I meet with one of her new clients with a minimal floral budget. I agreed and the rest was history. To this day she is still one of my largest and trusted referral sources.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I have one business partner and that’s likely all that I will ever have. We became acquainted throughout the years and developed sweet and endearing business relationship. The best part is that our rapport was built on reciprocity and gratitude flowing both ways. I was a patron of her business and she was a faithful patron of mine. After about 7 years of working on small project together I learned that her only daughter was getting married and that they wanted to work with my organization for the production of the event. To date the, it was our largest production and charged the trajectory of my business. After we successfully produced the wedding, I was approached about entering into a partnership with her on a event rental furniture business.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Pivots don’t always come out of failure. Oftentimes my pivots have come as a result of reflection. For me, a vital pivot was expanding our floral offerings during the pandemic with the hopes of serving grieving families, finding new income, sustaining cashflow and keeping my employees working. As a result of this pivot, I was able to lay the foundation for what would become our current Flower and Gift Store, Brookland Park Flowers and Gifts. There we offer fresh flowers, gifts, and economical cash and carry event flowers.
