We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brock Wilbur. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brock below.
Brock, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with talking about how you serve the underserved, because in our view this is one of the most important things the small business community does for society – by serving those who the giant corporations ignore, small business helps create a more inclusive and just world for all of us.
At The Pitch in Kansas City, we’ve spent 43 years trying to serve the people of the metro by covering the stories that were too outside-the-box or outside the mainstream discussion for other outlets to tackle. Whether it is remaking an area of town that politicians have left to economic rot or musicians pulling themselves up by their bootstraps, we’re constantly endeavoring to represent the city and its diverse interests as best we can. One of the ways we do so is to reach out into the community to find and develop new writers, allowing the voices of the city best suited to tell our collective tales to have the platform they need to share it to our huge audience of readers—in pursuit of making this a better place to live for all.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m the editor-in-chief of The Pitch—a 43 year old alternative newspaper serving the people of the Kansas City area. What started as a free flyer in a local record shop has become a primary news source for tens of thousands each and every day, via our glossy magazine available for free around the city, and our daily breaking news coverage online. We focus on people, politics, food & drink, and cultural features of all kinds.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
Lol. No thank you.
How’d you meet your business partner?
One of the co-owners of The Pitch is my wife, Vivian Kane, who is a political editor at an international news outlet called The Mary Sue. We met while writing at the same publication eight years ago, and now we share a vision for the future of KC and the exponential growth of this publication.
