We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brock DeBoer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brock below.
Alright, Brock thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
When I think back about a risk I have taken the one that really sticks out was to bet on myself and pursue my career as a full time artist. After being an artist assistant and having the opportunity to see how far I could go and the steps that that artist had taken it was time for me to go for it. Its not easy leaving the security of employment and the community that your a part of in that environment but there is nothing better than the feeling of earning something that you dream about. I had always made my work no matter how many jobs I was working I always had a studio and dedicated as much time as I could to it and I eventually came to the crossroads of I can either work for someone else or myself but the time is now. And after passing on a few projects because there just wasn’t enough time in the day for me to go to work then come home and work the decision was easy. This risk though has been the best I could have taken and although it isn’t always easy being a full time artist and navigating the world of business and keeping everything together it has been incredibly rewarding.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Brock DeBoer I am 39 years old and live and work in Joshua Tree CA. My primary medium is porcelain and I create sculptures that are inspired by my past and present capturing objects in their exactness and finishing them with realistic and Delft inspired surface treatments. I got my start in ceramics in High School and then studied ceramics at the Kansas City Art Institute and have continued to work in art and ceramics throughout my personal and professional career. The primary focus in my studio is creating my sculptural works which are exhibited nationally and internationally with my galleries that represent me as well as producing high level ceramic objects for brands and companies. My works stand out because of the extreme craftsmanship and attention to detail as well as the precise executions of clients as well as my own designs and objects through my vast knowledge of materials. This level of craftsmanship is something that I am proud of because it is not always easy to achieve this consistently and is something that I strive for in every object that I make.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding aspects about being an artist is seeing people connect with my work and vision as well as witnessing a viewer bring their own meaning to a piece. There’s many times with the objects I create where a collector will tell me a story about how significant this item is to them and the relationship that they have with it. It’s an honor to create something that another person really connects with and cherishes.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I haven’t had a moment that has brought me into this world of NFT’s and digital creation. I think its great that people are exploring it but ive stayed in the tangible world.
