We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brock and Boston Mikesell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brock and Boston , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
When we were younger we would watch a bunch of YouTube videos and thought it would be fun to start up our own channel. We posted our first video which was a small Q&A. We learned a lot of YouTube skills from our older sister Alyssa Mikesell. She taught us how to edit our own videos.
Knowing what I know now I wish we would’ve put up some more content on our YouTube channel. We were always dong something random and I wish we filmed all of that to look back at all of those childhood memories. While doing YouTube at a young age we learned a lot. First off is becoming accountable. We made sure that each week we would have videos ready to be uploaded. That was a really good skill for us to learn.
Brock and Boston , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We are identical twins from Salt Lake City, Utah that recently moved to Nashville, Tennessee. We have been doing social media since 2016. Before all of that Boston (the younger twin) was involved in a lot of acting projects. Brock (the older twin) was involved in sports, mainly basketball. Entering 6th grade we decided that it would be fun to create a YouTube channel. We filmed a few videos here and there but started taking it seriously when we vlogged almost every single day of summer. On May 26 we hit 10,000 subscribers which was our first ever big accomplishment. Now in total we have over 1.1 million followers on all of our social platforms.
Some life challenges we have had to face is healing from a plane crash we were in two years ago. We were flying over the some Utah mountains and lost all power. We ended up crashing by Moon Lake. There were a total of six people on the plane and we all made it out alive. There was still a lot of healing physically and emotionally.
This past year we bought our first house together and were able to renovate it. We got to film each project we did in our house and share ideas with our followers. We started out by doing small projects by building beams to rcompletly renovating our main bathrooms. This project took up most of our time in the summer but was worth the time!
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Engaging it one of the biggest ways people can help other creatives! The algorithm is pretty tricky to navigate. Simply liking or commenting on posts can help the creators content be pushed out to more people.
Other things people can do is messaging and having conversations with creators. One of our favorite things to do with viewers is getting to know them personally. It makes it feel like you have a bunch of friends that each got your back!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is being able to make someone laugh or smile. Making someone smile is such a good feeling!
