We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Briyan Lambey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Briyan below.
Alright, Briyan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I can’t think of a specific moment, because I feel like it’s always been a part of me. I am Belizean and Guatemalan. When I was young we would take trips to Guatemala and my parents said that I would dance in the middle of the street for tourists. I grew up loving music, dance and fashion. It’s been such a part of me that my life has always just sort of led me into those areas. All that to say it’s been so natural and innate that it never really felt like a choice, more like a purpose. One step has naturally led to the next step and here I am! I get to do what I love and do that thing that I was created for.

Briyan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Growing up in a small town in Belize, there wasn’t a ton of opportunities to be successful within a creative industry. I have always loved music. In high school, I was a drummer in the marching band and eventually found myself in a little band that played local gigs. After a while the band fizzled and I had to figure out life and how to provide for myself and my family, but all roads eventually led me back to music. I would spend my free time writing lyrics and connecting with local producers to create songs. Nothing ever really took off, but I was having fun. It wasn’t until the last few years that I took a course on creating music for tv and ads that I found a profession that really clicked. I jumped all in and have found so much joy in getting to create music for brands and tv shows. I love making unique music. I think being Belizean sets me a part in that I offer a unique sound that is rarely heard. I love to blend my sound with the sound of whoever I collaborate with, which creates new beats and lyrics that set our stuff apart from the rest. I love creating music that stands out, that is a little different. One of the things I am most proud of is my ability to bring people together. I am able to create quickly because I have a group of producers and friends that I can call on at the drop of a hat to create whats needed. I always know who to put on what track and I have a ton of fun doing it. Music is my passion and whenever I get an opportunity to create, I go all in. When you work with me, you get my 100%. I pride myself on making good music thats fun to listen to and fun to create and I think that shows through my work.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
For most of my musical journey, I was trying to make it big as a recording artist. I spent most of my time striving to create the next big track. I would try to scrounge up any spare cash to get a well-known artist to feature on my records. I was hustling to no avail. I was making records I was proud of, but I wasn’t providing for my family, which is my goal in life – to make money doing what I love. The pivot into making music for Visual Media happened so randomly. My wife and I moved our family to the states to work on my green card. I was in a new place, unable to work, just stuck waiting. I heard about a sync course that was happening online and I just knew I needed to take it. We put together all our pennies to cover the cost of it and I jumped right in. That course changed my life. It like blew the doors open for my creativity to be able to thrive in just creating. I wasn’t trying to make it big, I was just having fun making music and getting to meet new creatives that have eventually become family. When that green card came in, I was READY! I hit the ground running and within the first year had a song on a Netflix series. I am so grateful for the journey. My advice to anyone would be to remember that sometimes your path to success can look different than what you are imagining. Keep your mind and your heart open, because God might be pointing you down a better path.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think, for me, the best thing is having the freedom to do what I want. I mean, there is something so satisfying about taking an idea, lyric, or melody and bringing it to life. I get to use my gifts and talents to speak into other people’s lives and inspire them. For me, if I get to bring a smile to someone’s face, thats a win! I also get to create with the most amazing people. There is nothing like the family that I have found in the producers, writers, agents, and engineers that have become family to me and my family. We have been through the mud together, and just knowing you aren’t going through something alone, is everything. I know that’s super rare, so I am grateful for these guys every day.
