We were lucky to catch up with Brittni Lawrence recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brittni, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
That thought has crossed my mind several times. So much so that I struggled to write this article. I thought that it might be safer and more convenient if I got a full-time job and put my business on the back burner. However, I love being creative. I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything other than what I’m doing right now. The joy I bring to my clients is irreplaceable. Being an artist brings me so much joy, that I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I don’t get the same fulfillment at a regular job that I receive as an artist and small business owner. It is risky to become an entrepreneur, whereas having a regular job provides more financial stability. After having my business for 3 years I felt it was time to break away from the financial crutch of a regular job. Through the pandemic, I was fortunate enough to solely rely on my craft as my mainstream income. Realizing that I was able to provide myself with the ability to experience my life on my terms; I knew that I was ready to commit to my craft and truly take my business to the next level.
Brittni, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
The first time I picked up a paintbrush was at my cousin’s birthday party. My aunt ordered a pallet from Amazon and suggested that I would do a great job. She was right! All the guests raved about how amazing my designs looked and it intrigued me to find a job doing beautiful artwork.
Soon after, I began working for another party entertainment company and it was through working at that company that I solidified my love for face painting. Little by little, I began working a few small parties for close family and friends. They gave me so many wonderful reviews that I decided to take my business to the next level and file for my company name with the state of Florida. I immediately began launching marketing on social media sites and my clientele grew to corporate events and many online party searches throughout South Florida!
Face Painting Brittni offers a variety of services including face painting, hair braiding, glitter tattoos, event planning and more ! What sets us apart from other brands besides our unique art is our level of professionalism. My goal is to make sure that every child leaves with a smile and that their parents are just as happy.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of my profession is being able to make an impact on the youth in my community. As a professional face painter I’ve had the pleasure of partnering with nonprofit organizations, Children’s after-school programs, and many more wonderful groups. This has allowed me to bring joy to lots of children throughout South Florida. It’s the little things that kids do that make it all worth it. From their huge smiles and reactions to their small comments and gestures that show their appreciation for a job well done. Some of my favorites are “wow, you’re really good” and “ oh my goodness I love it, thank you so much” or the occasional hug or wanting their parents to take their picture with me. It’s seeing them so happy that lights up my world. Face painting is such a confident booster and I make it my duty to hype up each client that sits in my chair and provide them with a quality and efficient design that they’re sure to love.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
When I first began my journey as an artist I watched numerous tutorials on Youtube and Instagram. I joined Facebook groups for face painters and networked with fellow artists in my area. I recently had the pleasure of attending FABAIC (the Face and Body Art International Convention) in Orlando, Florida. I feel it has truly helped me to advance and hone in on my craft. The atmosphere was inviting and I was able to learn new techniques and information. Being surrounded by so many talented artists was an unforgettable experience. It opened my eyes to my potential and fueled the fire in me to progress even further in my business. I am constantly educating myself on new designs, products, and social media marketing. Paired with consistency the possibilities are endless.
