We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittney Phillips a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brittney, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Blending Bravely came from my own experiences as a mom and stepmom, feeling overwhelmed by the complexities of blending families. I was navigating new relationships, managing conflict, and dealing with unresolved issues from past relationships, all while trying to keep the peace. There wasn’t much out there that really addressed these unique challenges in a way that felt practical and relatable, and I realized I wasn’t alone in feeling this way.
That’s when the idea hit me: blended families needed more support than just generic advice. They needed real, actionable tools to navigate the emotional and practical struggles they face every day. I knew I could offer something different by combining my personal experience, with the tools I had developed to improve communication, connection, and emotional resilience, and my newest certification in somatic healing.
What got me most excited was the chance to help families move from just surviving to actually thriving. There was a real need for this kind of support, and I knew that if I could help even one family feel more connected and at peace, it would be worth it. That’s how I knew Blending Bravely was a project I had to pursue.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Absolutely! I’m a certified professional coach and somatic healer, and I specialize in helping blended families navigate the unique challenges that come with combining different family dynamics. My journey into this work really began with my own experience as a stepmom. I was learning firsthand how tough it could be to manage the emotions, relationships, and conflicts that often come with blending families. I saw that many stepmoms were struggling, just like I was, and that inspired me to create Blending Bravely—a place where I could offer real, practical support for families in this situation.
Initially, I focused on coaching moms and stepmoms on their mindset, and how to improve communication, set boundaries, and manage family dynamics. But over time, I noticed that a lot of my clients were feeling stuck in their emotional patterns, no matter how much we worked on practical solutions. That’s when I realized there was something deeper going on, and I decided to get certified in somatic healing.
Adding somatic work has been a game-changer, both for me and my clients. It’s allowed us to address not just the external conflicts in a family, but also the internal ones—the emotions that live in the body and keep us stuck in cycles of stress or frustration. Now, I help clients connect with their bodies and emotions, so they can heal from within while still using the practical tools I teach, like active listening, conflict resolution, setting boundaries, and mindset work.
At Blending Bravely, I offer a combination of 1:1 coaching and an online community called The Studio. Whether we’re working on communication, stress management, or navigating difficult conversations, I guide my clients through both the emotional and practical sides of family life.
What really sets Blending Bravely apart is this holistic approach—I focus on both emotional healing and real-world solutions. I’ve seen so many women transform, going from feeling overwhelmed in their roles as stepmoms to feeling confident, peaceful, and more connected with their families.
What I’m most proud of is watching families move from a place of conflict and disconnection to one of understanding and growth. It’s incredibly rewarding to see these shifts happen, and that’s what drives me every day.
If there’s one thing I want potential clients or followers to know, it’s that there are real, effective tools to help you navigate blended family life. You don’t have to stay stuck or handle it all on your own—there’s support out there, and I’m here to help.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One story that really illustrates my resilience is how becoming a business owner pushed me far outside my comfort zone. When I started Blending Bravely, I was passionate about helping blended families, but I quickly realized that running a business required a whole new skill set—one I wasn’t entirely prepared for. It wasn’t just about coaching anymore; it was about learning how to market myself, manage social media, create content, and build a brand. Honestly, it was overwhelming at times.
Social media was especially challenging. I’m naturally more of a private person, and the idea of showing up consistently on platforms, sharing my story, and creating content that would resonate with others felt really uncomfortable. I struggled with messaging—trying to figure out how to present my work in a way that felt authentic but also reached the people who needed it most. There were moments when I doubted if I could do it, or if anyone was even listening.
It didn’t take long to realize I couldn’t do it all on my own. So, I did what I encourage my clients to do—I reached out for help. I hired coaches to guide me through the business side of things, from messaging and marketing to learning how to run a business effectively. It was humbling at first, but it was also empowering. Getting support helped me see that I didn’t have to be perfect at everything to succeed. I could lean into the areas where I was strong and ask for help in the areas where I needed to grow.
This process challenged me in ways I didn’t expect. It forced me to get comfortable being uncomfortable, to face my fears of putting myself out there, and to learn to trust the process even when I wasn’t seeing immediate results. But it also gave me the resilience to keep going. Every time I faced a new challenge—whether it was figuring out social media or shifting my messaging—I saw it as an opportunity to grow, both as a business owner and as a person.
Looking back, I’m proud of how far I’ve come. Building a business has pushed me to develop new skills, step into leadership, and embrace the discomfort of growth. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth every challenge. And I’m grateful for the support I received along the way, because without it, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was the idea that I had to do everything on my own to be successful. For the longest time, I thought that being a good business owner (and even a good stepmom) meant having all the answers and figuring everything out by myself. I believed that asking for help was a sign of weakness, and that if I couldn’t handle it all, it meant I wasn’t cut out for it.
The backstory here is that when I started Blending Bravely, I was trying to wear all the hats—coach, content creator, social media manager, business strategist—you name it. I didn’t want to admit that I was struggling with the business side of things because I thought I should be able to figure it out. But the more I pushed through on my own, the more overwhelmed and stuck I became.
Eventually, I hit a point where I knew I couldn’t keep going at that pace. That’s when I realized that doing it all alone wasn’t just unsustainable—it was unnecessary. I started working with coaches who specialized in business, marketing, and messaging, and that was when things really started to shift. I learned that getting help wasn’t a weakness—it was a strength. It allowed me to focus on what I’m best at and get support where I needed it.
This lesson not only changed how I approach my business but also how I show up in other areas of my life. Now, I’m much more comfortable reaching out for help and recognizing that success isn’t about doing everything yourself—it’s about knowing when to lean on others. Unlearning that belief gave me the freedom to grow both personally and professionally, and it’s something I encourage my clients to embrace as well.
