We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittney Oddo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittney, thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Social media marketing and content is a saturated field where we are always tasked with figuring out how to differentiate ourselves. One way we stand out is by focusing on building content systems. The creative part of social media and content marketing is often the first and most important piece of the puzzle for content agencies. While creativity is important, we’ve found that without proper systems in place, creativity is stifled. That’s why we see a lot of creative businesses not able to handle the task at hand. Without systems in place, creative agencies are spending more time trying to make it happen for their clients versus creating. At ATB Social, we value systems and we view content as a key part in the overall system that involves strategy, reporting, and more. That’s why our tagline is Systems. Sales. Social.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Brittney Oddo and I run an award-winning content and social media agency called ATB Social. We are based out of of Ohio, but we have a diverse team all over the world. We offer social media management, content writing, strategy consulting, training, and speaking. We help our clients create consistent, purposeful, lead-generating content using strategy and systems. We’re proud of our strategic approach to content, our dedicated team, and our content creation system.
Any advice for managing a team?
It’s important to start off by setting expectations for your team at the beginning. Before you even look for someone, you should understand what your business needs and why. You should also understand what qualities you need in another person. Communication is also super important and having space to have needed conversation. Lastly make sure your team understands that they are apart of the team. Sometimes, you have to go above and beyond to do that but the payoff is worth it.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Starting out, the business was entirely me. I did all the things to keep this business running from client work to sales to accounting to marketing. My business was doing pretty well for a one-woman show until I completely burned myself out to the point where I was ready to quit. Instead, I decided to shift from the freelancer model to the agency model and start teaching other aspiring writers to do what I did for my clients. Now, we have a team and I have offboarded tasks from my plate freeing me up to focus on business growth while providing opportunities to others.
