We were lucky to catch up with Brittney Norman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brittney, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
Reflecting on my journey, I can confidently say that I wish I had started my business at the age of eighteen. Imagining the milestones I could have achieved by now is exciting. However, realistically, if I could go back in time, I believe I would have started my business at a similar time or a couple of years sooner.
The idea of owning a salon suites business first crossed my mind over ten years ago in Atlanta. But pursuing various career paths, enjoying the typical pursuits of a twenty-something-year-old, and traveling took precedence before establishing BSALON SUITES. Starting earlier might have allowed me to embark on this entrepreneurial journey sooner. Still, I believe the experiences I gained in my Corporate Finance career and other ventures were crucial in preparing me for the challenges of entrepreneurship and laying a solid foundation for BSALON SUITES and my other aspirations.
To be fair, I established BSALON SUITES amidst the pandemic. Starting later might have provided more financial stability and resources, but it could have also meant missing out on valuable opportunities for growth and learning during an unprecedented moment in history. Ultimately, the timing feels right, and I’m grateful for the journey that led me here.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Brittney, the owner of BSALON SUITES. My journey into entrepreneurship began with a background and career in Finance and various entrepreneurial pursuits, including consulting, real estate investing, e-commerce, and financial literacy education. BSALON SUITES is a Houston-based salon suites community dedicated to providing contemporary and personalized spaces for Beauty and Wellness Professionals.
What sets us apart is our commitment to offering not just spaces, but also community and lifestyle amenities tailored to the needs of our Professionals. I’m most proud of transforming a long-held vision into reality with BSALON SUITES and creating an environment where Beauty and Wellness Professionals can thrive.
In addition to BSALON SUITES, my vision for success in all my entrepreneurial endeavors is driven by a belief in divine timing and the inevitability of achieving my goals.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I am proud to say that I fully self-funded BSALON SUITES. With a background in Finance, I used my expertise to strategically manage my career income, savings, and investments to secure the initial capital. Additionally, I supplemented my income through consulting, side gigs and various other opportunities.
By leveraging these resources and careful planning, I laid a strong financial foundation to bring BSALON SUITES to life. As I envision the scalability of my business and explore new ventures, I have begun looking into various funding options, including personal investments, creative external financing, and of course, grants! Ideally, any external capital I receive must align with my desire to maintain at least a majority ownership of BSALON SUITES and my future businesses.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was my rigid expectations of failure, success, and everything in between. Initially, I approached entrepreneurship with predefined goals, milestones, timelines, and a clear vision of what success should look like. However, I quickly realized that my entrepreneurial journey would be filled with unpredictability, requiring flexibility and adaptability.
Instead of sticking to a rigid plan, I’ve learned to embrace fluidity, pivot, and evolve when necessary. This mindset shift has empowered me to navigate uncertainties with confidence, minimize self-doubt, and trust in my instincts and the evolving needs of my business. Remaining resilient and courageous has enabled me to pivot into entrepreneurship, establish BSALON SUITES, and embark on a fulfilling entrepreneurial journey.
