We recently connected with Brittney Moore and have shared our conversation below.
Brittney , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the best thing you’ve ever seen (or done yourself) to show a customer that you appreciate them?
People will come to me for a gift when someone they know is going through a difficult time in their lives. Although it wasn’t the original direction I had planned for my business, handmade skincare, and aromatherapy are thoughtful and meaningful gifts. Especially for those undergoing cancer treatment, hospitalization, or even during end-of-life care. I always include a handwritten note, some dried flowers, and an extra bit of love to make the gift more personal. Customers and their loved ones feel more valued and heard than they would with a large company.
Having experience caring for my daughter during her cancer treatment. I know a bit about what they’re going through and can meet them with the care and compassion the situation deserves.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I originally became interested in this industry because of my mom. She is an aesthetician and introduced me to the ritual of caring for my skin from a young age. My mom’s family is aboriginal from the Mohawk tribe. Since I was a child I found myself drawn to herbalism and natural medicine. I earned a diploma in holistic nutrition and I combined it with the education I had in skin care. I realized I could create something far more beautiful and effective than traditional skincare products.
My business is called Rosehip Essentials, I make fresh botanical skincare. I’m most proud of the fact that some of my products including the Rosehip Essentials Facial Serum and Aromatherapy Mist have a bit of a cult following. Getting a good review makes my day or even week. I’m humbled by the positive feedback from customers saying they had tried it years ago and have been hooked ever since. One of my Etsy reviews quoted, “I’ve traded in all of my $300 creams for your Serum”. Those emails and reviews motivate me. Sometimes on the days when I feel down and want to quit, I’ll read reviews or emails from customers. This reminds me of why I continue to be motivated to create.
It really is just the quality of the ingredients that makes me different. I formulate with unrefined and fresh ingredients sourced from the earth. When my daughters drag me into Sephora, it opens my eyes to the stark differences between those products and mine. Similar to eating a processed snack vs a fresh salad from your garden.
Trending brands tend not to purchase the raw quality that I use because of cost. Crops differ from year to year, so an oil may smell or feel different. I celebrate the uniqueness and complexities of each plant. This sets my products apart from most mainstream skincare brands that use refined ingredients and cheap fillers. My Facial serum gives your skin the nutrients it’s missing. It smells and feels like you’re walking through a garden.
Mainstream brands also use inexpensive filler ingredients. Something like sunflower oil is fine, but when I see it as the first ingredient in an expensive face cream I can see they’re focusing on cost rather than quality. In contrast when you see ingredients such as pomegranate, rose absolute, neroli, rosehip, and prickly pear, some of these can be hundreds of dollars for a small bottle and very exquisite. I like that I can see through the B.S. of the beauty industry.
I also offer customized skincare. Some clients are incredibly sensitive, while others may have multiple needs such as acne as well as fine lines. They will contact me with their skin issues and I will create a personalized product for them.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The time in my life when I have had to be the most resilient is caring for my daughter when she battled childhood cancer at 3. She is a healthy 11-year-old now, but every other challenge I face in business or my personal life doesn’t compare to that journey. Aromatherapy was something that brought me comfort during that time. It didn’t change anything but it helped me to be a bit more in the moment and take things as they come.
As hard as it was, it truly reminds me to be grateful for every day. Interestingly enough I end up having a lot of customers who are cancer survivors. They are looking for more natural products and I’m able to recognize what they’ve been through and meet them with the compassion they deserve.
