We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittney Lickert a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Brittney thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
As an invitation designer, every project I take on begins with the couple’s story. How did they meet? What do they love to do together? From there, we move into the design details that shape the first impression of their wedding – color palette, floral inspiration, patterns, and personal design elements. I use these thoughtful touchpoints to craft a bespoke, heirloom invitation suite that reflects their unique journey.
One of the most meaningful suites I’ve created featured a custom watercolor pattern that became a central design element throughout the wedding. It captured the couple’s vibrant palette and refined aesthetic while subtly weaving in personal symbols from their relationship- Scrabble tiles representing their favorite game, a cross symbolizing their faith, a porch swing where countless conversations were shared, and even a slice of pizza, their favorite late-night snack. These details celebrated their high school sweetheart story and were carried throughout the wedding day – from menus to the seating chart – making every detail feel deeply personal.
There’s nothing more meaningful as an invitation designer than bringing a couple’s story to life through design, creating invitations that are heartfelt, distinctive, and unforgettable.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve loved creating for as long as I can remember – always sketching, painting, and working on art projects from a young age.
I went on to earn my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design, originally envisioning a path in branding and logo design. But during college, everything shifted when my sister asked me to design her wedding invitations. That one project sparked a new passion I didn’t see coming and soon, other people were asking me to design their wedding invitations too!
After graduation, I began working in home decor design while continuing to design wedding invitations in the evening. Over time, that side business began to grow in ways I never imagined. It came to a point where I needed to decide – do I take on my business full-time or keep it as a side-gig? After much prayer and thoughtful conversations with my husband, we made the decision for me to leave my full-time job and pursue Brittney Nichole Designs full time.
Let me tell you – it has been the best decision! Now, 12 years later, I’m incredibly grateful to do what I love! It’s allowed me the freedom to be at home with my two daughters while they were younger and even homeschool them the first couple years of their schooling. I am truly blessed and my heart is full!
Brittney Nichole Designs is a full-service heirloom invitation studio, thoughtfully guiding couples through their entire stationery journey – from save the dates to day-of details and signage. Rooted in my passion for painting and illustration, every piece of artwork used in my designs is created by hand (with the occasional touch of vintage art I just can’t resist). I take great pride in offering artwork that’s truly one-of-a-kind. Whether it’s including a beloved pup on the RSVP card or crafting a custom watercolor map of meaningful places, I love bringing personal touches to life in a way that feels both artful and deeply personal.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
As a home-based small business owner, balancing work and family life hasn’t always come easily. Early on, I believed that being busy was a sign of success and that turning down work could hurt my business. That mindset carried me through the first few years – especially before we had children – but once our family began to grow, the weight of trying to do it all became clear.
I realized that saying “yes” to every opportunity often meant saying “no” to time with my family. And for me, family comes first. I knew something had to shift. Over time, I’ve learned the importance of setting boundaries, recognizing that not every project aligns with the vision I have for my business or the life I want for my family. When I take on too much, it doesn’t just affect my work… it impacts my home and the people I care about most.
I’ve learned to set boundaries and intentionally limit the number of couples I work with each month. It allows me to give each project the attention it deserves while also protecting time for what matters most – my family.
It’s a constant learning experience, and one I certainly haven’t perfected. But I’ve found that when I keep my family goals at the forefront, I’m better able to build a business that supports the life I truly want.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding parts of being a creative – especially in the wedding industry – is having the honor of contributing to one of the most meaningful days in a couple’s life. There’s nothing quite like witnessing their reaction when they open their invitations for the first time. Seeing the joy and excitement in their eyes, and knowing their vision has come to life, is truly one of the most fulfilling moments of my work.
