We recently connected with Brittney Justice and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittney, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I feel so lucky and blessed to have the parents that I have. My parents are far from perfect. Just like everyone’s parents. However, I do feel they did a lot right when raising me and my siblings. The number one thing I receive from parents other than love is support. I have always felt supported from parents in every endeavor I have taken in my life. When people ask me about how I ended up becoming a massage therapist the story isn’t a straight line and I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the support of my parents. I started my schooling career after high school as a dance major. Dance has always been a huge part of my life and still is. However, the dance program wasn’t for me. After that I went into business. Business school also, wasn’t the right path for me. From there I went into the Kinesiology program. That’s what I got my Bachelors degree in and then followed that with massage school. With all that being said with every turn, change in major, and different career path I wanted to go down my parents always supported me and believed that I could do anything I set out to do. They never once told me something was a bad idea. They never told me I couldn’t do it. They never put an ounce of doubt in my mind. I use my schooling experience as story to show how much they have been there for me but, honestly they have been like that my entire life. My parents raised children who shoot for the stars and they fully believe and support that we can do it.
Brittney, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well for those of you who don’t know me. My name is Brittney Justice. I’m the owner and licensed massage therapist for Move Easy Massage. I have been in the industry for 3 years and have had my business for 3 years. I attended the University or Utah where I got my Bachelors Degree in Kinesiology. After that I attended massage school at Myotherapy Massage College. I grew up dancing and now teach at the same studio I grew up at. Fun fact I actually run my massage business out of that studio as well. Growing up dancing I have always loved how the body moves and works. So, naturally I ended up in field where I can help others with feeling their best and moving their best. I definitely work more on the therapeutic side of massage not so much the relaxation side. With that being said I do still provide a relaxing environment for their massage. As a massage therapist I love to help people with their most problematic areas. I have many clients who tell me I just get it and help them so much. That’s truly all I want to do is help.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I don’t know if this is really a lesson but something I think that is drilled in our heads in high school is that you have to have it all figured by the day you receive your high school diploma. I think that’s ridiculous amount of pressure to put on an 18 year old. The backstory to unlearning that lesson is my life story. You’re in high school for four years and you’re being constantly told that you’ll have to do this to get into college, you’ll have to do that while in college, once you’re out of high school you’ll have to be able to have your life figured out. I do think it’s important to have some sort of plan after high school but, I also think it’s ok if you don’t know. It took me awhile to truly figure out what I wanted to do and I sometimes not knowing gets looked down upon. Like it’s not ok to not know when in reality I know grown adults who still don’t know what they want to do with their lives. Exploring different things in life I think should be encouraged and celebrated when you’re young and trying to figure it all out. I work with dancers who are seniors and I often tell them that it’s completely ok to not have it all figured out right now. I wish I had someone telling me that when I was younger. Not to use it as an excuse but, to not feel like a failure when another life path didn’t work out.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
I would most definitely choose the same profession. I love what I do. I love the clients that I have. I think I’m good at what I do. I love learning new skills and ways to help my clients and potential future clients. I know so many people who just landed in a career and they like their jobs but, it’s not their dream career. I feel so lucky that I’m doing something that I’m passionate about.
