We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittney Hiller. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittney below.
Hi Brittney, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I was born with Pulmonary Atresia, a congenital heart defect where that fused a ventricle shut. Typically when we are born the ventricle begins to open and close naturally, mine did not.
Immediate open heart surgery a birth saved my life.
My parents assisted me in growing up understanding that yes, I was born a little differently than most, but I was encouraged daily to act like the healthy active kid that I was.
As many times as they were offered the opportunity to use the condition I was born with as an excuse, they never did.
I played soccer, tether ball, was a cheerleader, and began an active practice of yoga by age 15.
By having this enthusiastic mentality that I could be whatever I wanted, I hardly ever felt limited.
If limitations came through they were strictly caused by my own mindset, not once were they caused by my parents.
My Mom and Dad are to this day both encouraging of all that I choose to do within my life. I am grateful for them for the way they raised me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Many may not know this about me, but while I was in high school I began this love affair with yoga.
I was 15 when I learned the art of Savasana – the final relaxation pose in yoga.
When I learned we ended class with a nap, I was sold and knew right then and there, I was going to teach this to others.
Today, I Brittney Hiller am now the Founder and CEO of Effervescence YogaSpa a yoga studio and spa hybrid that offers an inclusive space for healing.
In 2012 I began teaching yoga outside as the self-coined “Outdoor Yogini” after I was fired from a yoga studio I loved working in.
This pop-up idea flourished into two weekly class sessions of Chair Yoga taught at Theravista, a local retreat center that has since sold.
In 2017, I had the random conversation with my husband that perhaps it’s time to open my own studio. He enthusiastically agreed, which caught me by complete surprise.
We moved forward on the idea and created EYS.
Today we are so grateful to continue to serve the Beaufort and Port Royal community with Yoga, Pilates, Therapeutic Massage, Embodiment Coaching, and more.
I am so grateful to have a team of amazing teachers who share their talents with our community.
One of my core values with Effervescence YogaSpa is collaboration.
Each Teacher offers the classes they choose, each one offers their unique style and it is because of this that makes us unique from other studios.
We welcome everyone into our space as if they are a friend that we have the joy of reconnecting with.
It is my mission to create a no-judgment zone that others can feel free to be themselves.
One of my most recent creations happened shortly after we moved into our new location in 2020.
Yes, as crazy as it seemed I chose to expand our studio and spa space while we were practicing online from our homes.
During that down time, I wrote my most recently book, Manifesting Maven.
A no nonsense guide to manifestation through my own personal stories.
From its inception I have shared with over 300 people how they can shift their mindset to live a much more powerful and positive life.
I am grateful for this ability to help others in health in wellness through mind, body, and self.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
When it comes to managing a yoga studio I learned lessons of what not to do early on.
Before I opened EYS, I was a manager of a studio. I learned that there were antiquated methods that were being taught and utilized within to business.
While I was teaching at various locations I learned that many of these methods were being used by multiple studios.
Many people had the idea that yoga should be given away at the expense of the wellbeing of the teacher teaching the classes.
I was attending massage therapy school at the same time that’s became a trained yoga teacher and thankfully within my college courses I learned ethical ways to do business.
When I was let go from the studio, I vowed to do things completely different.
No longer would a teacher count how many people came to their classes for fear of not being paid.
No longer would a teacher be expected to teach a class to non-paying students and not be compensated for their time.
No longer would the conversation that yoga and massage are to be given away because it helps other people heal.
(Other modalities that help others heal aren’t expected to be given away, so why are these?)
I experienced all of this and more before opening EYS.
It is my mission to change the narrative. I’ve been there and I feel business is to be handled ethically.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Everyone is a person, just like you and me.
This may seem like a no brainer, but it is amazing how many businesses are run with the bottom line in mind instead of building a relationship with their clients.
I love working with my clients because I take the time to get to know them.
I don’t know about you, but as a human, I want to be seen and heard.
The same goes for our clients.
It is why I have a policy that we know who walks through our door.
If someone is new to class, we introduce them.
If I have a new massage or Embodiment Coaching Client, I take the time to learn about them before jumping into the appointment.
I believe this truly helps in my ability to receive returning clientele.
I’m just so super grateful for them!
