We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittney Evans a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittney, thanks for joining us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Thankfully I have been able to earn a full-time living from my creative work. By the grace of God, there has been an extremely high demand for my DJ services ever since the first event that I DJ’d. This has been confirmation for me that I’m living in my purpose.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Brittney Evans. I am a wife, mother, nurse practitioner and DJ. My love for music stems back to my childhood. My mother and siblings are also music lovers, and music is something that brings us together.
I have always been known to create the best playlists for family and friend functions, which earned me the title
as being “the family DJ” before I decided to start DJ’ing professionally.
I started DJ’ing professional because I wanted to share my gift with the world. I am a person who loves to serve others and bring joy to the lives of others. This is the reason that I became both a DJ and a nurse practitioner.
Although DJ’ing is enjoyable and may seem easy, it isn’t for the weak. I often spend many long hours preparing for each of my events to ensure that I give each customer a unique, enjoyable experience. It’s particularly difficult for me since I work long hours as a nurse practitioner Monday through Friday, and I’m a mother who has a son who is very active in sports throughout the year and I’m a wife. What sets me apart from other DJ’s is my exceptional customer service, my song selections, my ability to DJ for any crowd and the fact that I’m a DJ who goes out of my way to ensure that my customers dance and enjoy themselves during the entire event. My set up is unique and professional, I always coordinate with each event
and I offer packages that include more than just DJ’ing services (I.e. lighting, picture booths and fog machines). I am a one stop shop. I strive to make my clients entertainment experience as stress free and enjoyable as possible from beginning to end.
What I am most proud of are the opportunities that I’ve had in such a short amount of time. This is my third year DJ’ing and I’ve had the opportunity to DJ for several world renowned artists, I’ve DJ’d in arenas and so much more. Another thing that I’m extremely proud of are the DJ awards that I’ve won. In 2023, which was my second year DJ’ing, I won 3 DJ awards (best nightlife entertainer, best up and coming DJ, and best Cincinnati DJ). I was also recognized as a “Healthcare Hero” in my community and received an award for in 2023 as well. Receiving awards in both of my careers was an unexplainable experience. My goal in life is to be the best that I can be in everything that I do, and I truly believe that I am doing just that.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I build my social media following by networking with people during events that I DJ and by marketing my business when I’m not DJ’ing. I always naturally gain followers at each event that I DJ from the people attending the events, as well as the people that they refer to me. Also, every time that I have the opportunity to discuss my DJ’ing business with someone I do just that, and after telling them about my business I ask them to follow me. I also make an effort to post quality, consistent content on social media that displays all of my work in the best light possible. Good marketing is extremely important when you’re working to build your social media following.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In my second year of DJ’ing I was given the opportunity to DJ for world renowned artists in an arena. When I arrived at the arena, I was told that I could not use my own equipment, and that I had to use equipment that I had never used before. Being that this was only my second year DJ’ing, and that I was DJ’ing a concert for world renowned artists and wanted to do the best job possible, and was forced to DJ with equipment that I had never used before made me extremely nervous. Before performing I said a prayer and found a that was familiar with the equipment and asked him to give me a brief tutorial which he graciously did. I put my fears aside, my trust in God, and rocked the house. This is one of the moments that I’m most proud of in my DJ career.
