We were lucky to catch up with Brittney Baker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittney , thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I was lucky enough to be immersed in the photography world in my teenage years, starting off as a model. I was surrounded my amazing creatives and sets and equipment and was shown how to open up your mind and skills to execute a vision. I had a fast track to this world, and I was thrown into it at full speed which I am so grateful on when I now look back. Having to learn on your feet was one of the best things for my skillset, ego and social graces.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Starting off as a model in my teenage years, I then transitioned over to photography. Having an amazing creative group around me, we were constantly pushing the limit as far as thinking pout of the box for our images. While still continuing my photography and modeling journey I then started teaching modeling and acting to the younger generation. I am firm believer that me being able to see and experience every aspect of a shoot helps me not only relate to my crew and models better but also gives me and added eye to look at the bigger picture on set.
I am most proud of my editorial and high fashion work. My goal is to make people feel an emotion or some sort of sensation when they look at my work. Adding depth and layers to my work is so important to me, and I think that these layers are what makes me stand out from the pack.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In 2014 I lost my life partner, and it was a long time before I was in the right state of mind to get back to work and photograph Families and Weddings and happy people enjoying and celebrating life. Being able to overcome my grief and realize that one of the wonders of life is to feel and enjoy every second. This journey forced me to see the beauty in everything. We are on this earth for a limited amount of time, why not do what makes you happy?
Take the risks?
Photograph yourself in all your glory, your children, your parents and your friends.
Because one day all you’ll have to look back on are photographs.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal that drives my work and journey would ultimately have my work seen around the world. Being published in Vogue and similar platforms, where humans from all walks of life see my images and understand the evoking emotions. Having the younger generation see my work and tear them out of magazine to pin on their wall or vision boards, to be inspired by everyday. When I was younger, I used to collect magazine pages and images that I wanted to be like when I grew up.
I want to inspire younger generations to take risks and be themselves completely without any worry of how the outside world would view it.
