We recently connected with Brittnee Brooks and have shared our conversation below.
Brittnee, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I ponder the thought of what it would be like if I pursued the career of being a Mortician often, but I know in my heart that the current creative path that I have chosen and am currently on has always been the right choice for me.
In high school. it literally hit me like a BRICK knowing I needed to pursue being a creative and I am so happy that it did because I don’t know that any other passion would describe me to my core. I love public speaking; I love taking things to the next level aesthetically. I love pushing the boundaries with branding, being a woman with a voice, and making a mark.
I find peace and excitement in knowing that every day that I wake up, I have another opportunity to make my own head turn with the hustle of my work because of the path that I have chosen. I personally think that there is nothing better than getting the opportunity to creatively show what is on your mind, how you can share your story to help make a difference in someone else’s life and being able to create something from the perspective that you see it as.
Creating my clothing line Halfrican Apparel has been a huge representation of how I view things creatively but also with an urban/fashion twist. I also am so stoked that my business accidentally fell into my lap as well, that’s how I know this passion was meant for me. (Some things that are meant for you never cross your mind until they are right in front of you, and you can no longer dodge em!)
I am so happy that I can use my voice to entertain, and story tell for those living their life right now to the fullest. Being a sports broadcaster as well as a radio Dj has allowed me to make a mark on those who want their story told, who would love someone they can trust with their news, someone who can make light of a tough situation and hand in hand make the day go by pleasantly with a good update on what hobby Snoop Dogg has picked up lately (:
All in all, I can’t say that something would light me up like what I am doing now as a creative and for that I am so thankful. Happy would be an understatement, how about stoked (;
Brittnee, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
A little overview on Brittnee B: I am a Colorado native and am a jack of many trades. As a profession, I am a radio DJ right here in Denver, CO as well as a sports and entertainment broadcaster. My current side hustle includes my clothing line Halfrican Apparel and I love taking photos on the side as well and helping those around me brand themselves in the way the want to be viewed in their professional and or personal life.
I was lucky enough to know that I was a creative earlier on in high school. I was garbage as math, I wouldn’t stop talking in class, and I loved anything that had to do with running the assemblies for the school. I know my blabber mouth had to get me somewhere and luckily it did. (: I got into the radio industry right out of high school with persistence and the eagerness to learn. I worked my way up starting as a promotions team member, discovering college wasn’t a fit for me and then dedicating all of my time to the station as a whole. In this time, I also promised myself and my mom that I would find something to take up the time of college curriculum not being a good fit and that is when the baby Halfrican Apparel was born. Fast forward to years later in radio, I am working hard in being your best friend on the airwaves when you are working in the office or running errands in the Mile High, making memorable events for you and your loved ones to attend and giving you the latest gossip on why Kim K and Kayne would never last. Radio has and will always be the boy in my life that I love no matter where he takes me.
As I HUSTLED at the radio station in Colorado Springs, I met up with a gymnastics teammate of mine, Kayla Chang and we accidentally created the logo of my brand Halfrican Apparel. We ran with it. One night I dropped a few designs that I had in mind so simple it was ridiculous of the logo that Kayla and I made and a few of my favorite sayings like “Ya Dig” and “You are Unbeweaveable”. I felt like the name Halfrican Apparel described who I am and want I want this brand to be for anyone that encounters in. I myself am bi-racial being African American and Caucasian and wanted my brand to be a place that no matter your race, gender, identity this line will be a place for you to find something that fits your vibe and hustle regardless. People showered my brand in L.O.V.E with that first initial drop. I remember that my mom and I were up all night fulfilling the orders and I thought in my head, “ugh oh, did I just accidentally start a business?” Yes babygirl, you did. Before I knew it, I was putting in bulk orders, redesigning, expanding into mercantile and co-op shops and THRIVING. And man did I have to learn everything on the go.
As for my broadcasting career, I knew that I didn’t want to create a box for myself when it came to public speaking, so I hopped on the internet to find ways to get involved with the sports and entertainment industry and that is when I ran into the organization GALvanize with Laura Okmin which changed my life tremendously and dramatically. Not only did I find some of my best friends through this organization who also had the same niche for me to pursue broadcasting on a higher level, but they wanted to be women who made changes and impacts and that was a no brainer something that I wanted to be a part of. Thanks to Laura Okmin for believing in me and taking a chance on my spunky personality and thinking weirdly enough that it was a tremendous fit for sports I got to work with a lot of amazing NFL teams such as the Jaguars, the Chargers, the Cowboys, the Shrine Bowl, and still going. It is okay ladies if you are covered in tattoos and you fly your mom out with you to your first NFL meet up because you are so nervous, someone will take a chance on you (:
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think that one of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist or creative would have to be the other people you impact in life without you even knowing it, I am very extroverted and really fill up my cup with other’s energy so anytime that I am reminded that what I am doing is either paving the way for another young individual, young entrepreneur, someone with a voice that feels like no one needs to hear it, or even a women who feels like there isn’t any room for her, that what makes what I do all worth it. That is the biggest reward my friend.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have personally had to pivot so many times in my life. There was actually one time that I got let go from radio after one of the biggest rewards that I earned. Here’s the thing, sometimes it’s not up to you. What fits you best, what you deserve, what is going to make more sense for you, that isn’t up to you. It’s up to the universe and what I can tell you is that universe always has you in favor. Not to dive into the whole horoscope situations-we can dive into that another time, but I am here to really preach that what is meant for you, will be. Did I think I was going to get back into radio after I got let go after one of my biggest accomplishments within the career, no. Did I think my business would continue to impact someone or thrive after I sold zero things at a mercantile after my business already had followers and was completely accomplished? Absolutely not. What I will say is that when you don’t have a plan, the universe does. It may not always be clear but the purpose and what is meant to be will come to light. Don’t be intimidated by a pivot (:
