We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittne Garza a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittne, thanks for joining us today. Looking back on your career, have you ever worked with a great leader or boss? We’d love to hear about the experience and what you think made them such a great leader.
I first met my mentor Linson Jamison in San Antonio when I was his cutting model. I have always looked up to him and his work and just getting to meet him that day was so special for me. Fast forward 6 months, and he was looking for an assistant in Colorado and I decided that I wasn’t getting what I needed from the salon I was at at the time to help me grow. So I took a risk and took the job and moved my family to Colorado to learn under one of the greatest. Since that day, I have learned so much, I have grown so much and I am so thankful for every opportunity he has given me. Linson is my mentor but he’s also like my little brother. I thoroughly enjoy going to work every day knowing it’s going to be a a great day and getting to help and watch him create some beautiful hair. He is one of the smartest, kindest, humblest, most genuine person I have met. I’ll never be able to thank him enough for everything he has done for me. I’m truly thankful everyday.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Brittne Garza And I am a wife , a mom of three, and dog mom. When I was 15 I started messing around with hair. I was on YouTube, watching Guy tang and trying all the new styles on all my friends. I ended up being up at a pretty young age so I put my career on hold so that I could raise kids. During that time is when I found my love for make up, and I pursued becoming a make up artist while taking care of my kids once they became school-age I decided that I was going to enroll back in school. I wish I could see my school journey was easy, but it was quite difficult. Halfway through the program I moved to Colorado and had to start over during Covid but that wasn’t going to stop me. During that time I became a bridal make up artist which I love so much, and still due to this day. I’ve been in the industry as a licensed cosmetologist for almost 2 years. I am currently specializing and lived in color, or what most people call balayage. With lived in color I want to give the most natural gorgeous results while giving you a seamless grow out so that you are able to come back to see me every 3 to 4 months. I’m currently being mentored by Linson Jamison known as @linsonhair on IG. I live by wanting my clients to feel beautiful, comfortable, and knowing that they are going to get the hair of their dreams. Because having them in my chair has always been my dream.

Have you ever had to pivot?
The most pivoting point in my career was when I left Texas and moved back to Colorado. The one thing I want people and hairstylist in this industry to understand it when you’ve outgrown a place. it’s OK to take a risk and leave a place that no longer serves you or treat you with respect. That it’s ok to choose yourself, It’s ok to take a bet on yourself. There is no reason to stay in a place or situation that wants to keep you small. We are creatives and we are meant to grow. If you can no longer grow where you’re at it’s time to leave. Leaving Texas was the best thing I ever did for my career, for my family, and for my mental health. Growing requires taking risks and betting on yourself. So take the risk, You’re Worth it.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
1000% Yes! I am an artist and I view hair as a canvas and my tools as my mediums. I love creating art Art on a canvas that’s moving and changing. Seeing my eye on other people as a walking art is amazing. I also love The client being able to see how beautiful they are, whether it’s me using makeup To enhance their natural beauty, or being able to create beautiful hair on their head. Seeing their smile and them getting to see how I see them is my favorite part of my job.
