SubscribeWe caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittiney Clay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittiney, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Well, hi, first off I’m Brittiney Nicole Clay, and I’m from Ellenwood, Georgia. I’m also formally known as “Butterfly”. Growing up, I was bullied as a child, and I had many struggles academically. I was raised from both my mom and grandmother. From what I remember, my mom had the TV on, and it just so happened I saw stunts and tumbling. At the time, I didn’t know that it was called cheerleading. My mom asked me, was that something I wanted to try? I said, yes! So, I was put into cheerleading to help me grow, and I believe it helped me academically and gain better social skills. From that point on, I started with recreational cheerleading, and then I graduated and entered competitive cheerleading. Throughout my cheerleading journey, I did a little bit of gymnastics and cheerleading, which also introduced me to dance. Throughout the journey, when I became of age, I transitioned to semi-pro cheer and dance teams. I also auditioned to be an Atlanta Falcon cheerleader. I didn’t make the cut, but it opened up other doors and possibilities. It wasn’t until an old friend told me about a work study program that dance studios had for those who wanted to pursue a career in dance and entertainment: video shoots, commercials, and tours. I applied and got accepted. It wasn’t until I first started the program that I knew dance is something I love’d and wanted to do. It was just a matter of how I was going to make things happen. Growing up with my grandmother, I started journaling like most teenagers and young adults do. From daily journaling, I started writing out prayers. From there, I ended up having my own teenage magazine, which I did with my younger auntie. My grandma and great uncle helped me publish. Despite having my own magazine, I always knew I wanted to dance and do something creatively in entertainment. It was a matter of how I was going to be able to handle and juggle both. But after I lost my grandmother, the magazine faded away. As well I couldn’t accept the offer to take on a full-time offer for work study at the dance studio because I was grieving and in a different headspace, and I had a lot to figure out. I eventually went to college for mass communication and graduated. I went to school to become a better writer and news reporter because I also like to be where the action is. But, during school when I had the choice to continue to pursue journalism or entertainment. I chose entertainment because that’s where my heart was, and I knew I wanted to master my talents and use my talents to make some sort of difference in the world. From there I can’t even remember how but I was introduced into vlogs and vlogging but I knew when I use to study dance videos on youtube, I would come across different home videos that are now called vlogs. I also used to record myself just for the fun of it, never really knowing it was a thing. But it wasn’t until I graduated college that I started dancing with my first dance company that I knew I wanted in the entertainment industry. It spoke to me more. I’d always been in drama, theatre, or dance any time it was available as a class. Fast forward after college, I decided I would wholeheartedly pursue dance and whatever came with it. So, I started learning ASL(american sign language) to bridge the gap of communication. I was told I should start documenting my journey, to show others that no matter your age or life set-backs you have anything that is still possible. So, as I began my journey in entertainment, I ended up working my way up to the point where I would get paid gigs, but the night before New Year changed all of that. I end up in a really bad car accident, which I am still working to fully bounce back from. I had to let everything go, and it helped push me to tap into other things I love doing and learn more about myself. That has led me to shift gears and put in the work to become a full-time content creator, actress, and overall entertainer. I knew I wanted to wake up doing what I love, get paid to be myself, and also make a huge impact and difference in the world.

Brittiney, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well, my name is Brittiney. Also formally known as “butterfly”. I grew up in between Stone Mountain and Ellenwood. As a child, I was always in church. I was always doing what I was told, and I was always taking life very seriously. The older I became, I learned not to take life so seriously, and now I have more of a goofy and silly persona. I still get work done, and I still serve GOD, but I have way more fun doing it. I’ve always been interested in performing arts, which led me on my journey to pursue dancing and content creating. It’s funny that most people remember me as the girl who had her own magazine when I was younger. Those who knew me as business women didn’t know I love dance, and those who I love dance knew nothing about me being a teen writer. All along all I’ve been trying to connect everything to show people that doubt that anything is possible.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I lost my grandmother to Ovarian, cancer was one of the most challenging times of my life. My company faded away, and I had to fight to regain my strength on a daily. As well rediscover and learn myself all over again. Most recently, when I experienced getting into a terrible car accident in 2020, it set me back years as an entertainer. The journey to recovery has been long and hard but I know I must continue to push through, have faith and fight through my obstacles to be able to do what I set out to do: dance, perform and entertain. Most importantly, make a difference with whatever I’m doing while on my journey.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, I simply want to make a huge and beautiful impact in the lives around me and be able to connect with people from all over the world whether it be through dance, writing, or my content creating. I just aim to be love that people need, give love to those who need it, and spread love because we need more hope and love in the world. I hope creatively I can reach and connect with as many people as possible through storytelling.
