We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittany Webb. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittany below.
Brittany, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
In reflection, I can see small defining moments throughout my career. The most profound was at my last job where I felt I was unable to apply my clinical skills effectively due to the company’s values and was not heard when providing my insights in my role. In addition to these issues, my supervisor and I did not align. In any case, this caused high stress and my work expectations pushed the boundaries into my personal life. My “aha moment” came when I experienced a loss and the company did not seem to blink an eye of concern. I realized that every job I had came with stress and came with leaders that did not fit my values, at least not all of my values. So then, I set out to create my own mental health private practice (Better Minds Counseling & Services) where I wanted it to be a true collaborative, supportive, environment for growth. It is so clear that when employees are treated respectfully and have the opportunity to be heard and tap into their skills, you essentially get quality of care in the services delivered. After all, in the field of mental health therapy, quality of care or therapy is the whole job. If a therapist does not feel their supervisor or colleagues are there for them, it is taxing on them with clients. What I realized, is that fear and the “standard” thoughts of a job held me back for so long and it was not until I experienced a loss that I needed to create a gain for myself and others alike. It was scary to think of creating something from scratch that I am solely responsible for. I thought back through my experience and realized that I had all the skills for the majority of starting the private practice, from being a trained therapist to even a C-suite executive. I also had to acknowledge my weaknesses and that I did not need to know everything to start a business. My drive became clear, I wanted to and have created a place for therapists to feel supported, and heard, and can continue to grow while providing quality and expert therapy to clients they see.
Brittany, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Brittany Webb LPC CCATP, owner and therapist at Better Minds Counseling & Services. Initially, thinking back on my interest in mental health was rooted in a high school class I took on Psychology. I was fascinated to understand how the brain works, how behaviors are influenced, and how individualized and simultaneously collective our experiences are. I reflected on this interest and recognized that I was also there as a support for so many friends, an “easy listener” as I often heard. So I went on to pursue that as a career. I understood when entering the field, that I had a strong drive for success, and to me that translated into “climbing the ladder”. So I worked through different areas of mental health from a therapist, middle management, and CEO. I realized I wanted to come after my “aha moment” from a previous job to create my own private practice. At my practice, I have a team of therapists where we all have our own areas of expertise. We provide therapy to children, adolescents, and adults (of all ages), through individual therapy, couples therapy, and family therapy. The therapy team has a range of specialties which include: addiction/in recovery, anxiety, chronic illness, chronic pain, depression, general life transitions, grief and loss, LGBTQIA+, OCD, relationships/couples counseling, stress, and trauma. All of our therapy services are online in Pennsylvania. I created an online mental health private practice to reach people and eliminate travel and the challenges of connecting to quality services. In the future, we will be expanding our services to other states such as Maryland and more.
I am proud of the therapists on the team as they provide quality care to the clients they see at the practice. They have a passion for connecting with others by helping clients where they are and getting them to where they want to be.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I absolutely would. I can’t imagine not doing what I am doing today. While I started off getting into the field from a fascination standpoint, it became clear about how to apply that fascination of psychology. It feels like I won the opportunity to connect and help people when they need it the most. Mental health is such an unseen health but does not mean it is not there. I think the only thing I would change is starting my mental health practice sooner but honestly, maybe not a lot sooner. My experience, professionally and personally, over the years taught me so much and landed me where I am today and I couldn’t be more grateful for that.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Training and knowledge only gets one so far. What helped me was all of my supports. Throughout the years, I discovered who my true supporters were and began to hold them closer to me. To me, that increased the quality of my supports. Has it been challenging to lean on my supports? Of course it has been, especially for someone who wanted to be able to be independent and did not want to burden others. But I talked so much to clients about supports, I channeled mine over the years and it has meant a world of difference. What is great, are the opportunities that my supports, my community, and my network, continue to grow, and is such a mutual relationship with all of them.
