We recently connected with Brittany Valentine and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I absolutely do wish that I started my creative career sooner! But only when it comes to music. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always been around and involved with music. But, not as the confident, strong singer that I am today. So if I could make once wish. It would be to bet on me sooner.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Evocative, Empowering, Eccentric. Tapping into classical guitar sensibilities and infusing them with soul. Valentine has formed an Indie Psych band Called Sister Ray? that will Get you energized and self-actualized, sucking you into Sister Ray’s orbit, making you encounter her gravitational grooves and blistering performances.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’m from I’m from New Orleans! Starting with hurricane Katrina, It seems like everything in my life has tried to stop me from getting to this point. Every time I finally was stepping into “who I am.” Something happened and I had to move and start over again. This happened on 4 different accounts in my developmental stage. Even with the lack of support, resources, and knowledge. My heart still yearned for something and then I found it was music. My soul wanted to sing. So I guess you can say I was resilient, because no matter how much life tried to push me away from music my mind, body and soul drew me back every time. It wouldn’t let me give up because this is who I am.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew to bet on and believe in myself. I wish I knew that it was okay to learn Guitar and piano sooner, it was okay to educate and express myself musically and it was okay to express myself with song lyrics to say how I felt. I was so afraid to see me and believe in me that I betted on everyone around me. I supported everyone, but me. I wish I knew at the time that I mattered too.
