We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittany Towns a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
I love this question! I always wanted a brand name with meaning. It was hard at first to think of a name at first. In my personal life I had recently been going through a hard time where I found myself saying “I just want to live and enjoy life. That’s a true luxury to me”. I wanted that luxury in my life. I started looking up different languages for live. That’s when I came across vivre. Vivre is french for to live. When checking availability I discovered vivre wasn’t available. I decided to drop the “i” and boom, we have VVRE- Live Life in Luxury.
Brittany, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I truly have a love for fashion items such as bags and jewelry. Of course growing up you see the designer and luxury lines and fall in love with the look and appeal. However, I also saw them as something unobtainable due to finances and availability. As I got older, I thought it would be irresponsible for me to purchase this $2000+ bag when I could put that money towards something else a little more important. I wanted to create a brand that didn’t leave my potential customers feeling that way. I believe everyone should have the luxury they desire but at a more affordable price tag. Also, I want my customers to feel like they are a priority- thought about and heard! It’s nothing like being apart of a community that cares about what you think- genuinely! I love seeing new trends in the fashion world but it’s something about a classic timeless piece in your collection. Customers will find with our signature tote and probably a lot of pieces clean lines and classic shapes. However, you never know we might pop out from time to time with a trendy shape, style and color (as we see fit). Always staying true to the brand.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the major limiting lessons I had to unlearn was that I have to do everything by myself. I have always been a very independent woman (I got it from my mama) and that didn’t change when I started my business. Doing everything yourself makes sense at first when you’re starting a business, but I quickly learned that it dramatically limits your growth when you make a habit of relying solely on yourself. There are only so many hours in the day, and you can’t be everything to everyone. I still have to be a wife, mom, sister, friend, etc and I quickly became burnt out. It was a really tough time and I made the decision to close my business. This time around learned that I although I am a Jill of all Trades , I have to lean on and find competent people to bridge the skills gap. This took a look inward and a high level of self-awareness, but once I started delegating tasks that are not my strong suit or the best use of my time, I felt so much better. I am starting to see much better results and feel so much better letting others handle certain areas ( I definitely need to let go of alot more areas in my business- in time).
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Growing a business while also being a wife and mom can be pretty challenging at times. I have two beautiful children- Khloe, 11 and Karter, 4. Karter was diagnosed with Autism at 2 years old and while the diagnosis did not scare us, it made me wonder if I could devote the time necessary to build a business from the ground up. Building business resilience involves creating systems and processes that make it easy to respond quickly, effectively, and efficiently to unexpected disruptions- I wondered if I could do that. I felt alone, overwhelmed and exhausted when I first started my “mompreneur” journey. I sat down one night and made a plan. I knew I wanted to show my children what hard work looks like without them feeling like I wasn’t there for them. Of course, I had to start with a clear vision and allow myself room to pivot as necessary. Next I had to make sure I surrounded myself supportive people that not only supported me and my brand but also my children. People that didn’t mind stepping up and helping when my cup was getting empty. Lastly I had to focus in on what I wanted to do in my business. It was obvious to me that it would be something to do with fashion. Something that brought me great joy. My business soon became my little bit of “me” time. I won’t give up on my dream of being a successful business owner and surely will wear my super mom cape proudly.
