Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Thomas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brittany, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I have always been passionate about the arts ever since I was a little girl. I have taken different artistry classes and done several DIY projects in my free time. Placing my creative interest aside, I attended college at Clarkson College and graduated with my degree in Healthcare Business. After several years of being an oncology abstractor I gave birth to two handsome twin boys. One of my twins, Eric, was born with severe Laryngomalacia; a life-threatening diagnosis that required surgery, several doctor visits and careful monitoring by me and his father. His condition not only affected my personal life, but my professional life in ways I couldn’t foresee or fathom. I was treated as a less desirable employee and pushed out at my job due to my situation. Because of this, I decided utilize my creative passions to start my own business. It was through heart ache, frustration and my true passion to create that I founded Dreamy Displays in 2020.
Brittany, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I created and introduced a completely new market to Omaha. I looked at what was being offered in bigger cities and found a way to bring it here. Dreamy Displays is a full service creative design studio that specializes in elevating spaces with our vibrant backdrop displays. We create displays for brands, events and interiors. We also have specialty event rentals, including the first champagne wall in Nebraska. All of our products can be customized with signage, florals, balloons and other materials to maintain a cohesive look with our client’s other decor pieces. And while my brand is known for it’s seamless fabrication and experiential artwork, I have been dubbed “The Backdrop Queen,” for curating positive energy through my fresh, authentic and inclusive installations.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Dreamy Displays, like many small businesses has had to pivot in response to the COVID-19 global health crisis and has seen an uptick in at-home and small scale events. People are wanting to find new ways to celebrate and I have had to use my innate creative abilities to push design boundaries to set the scene at events and provide a bright spot in a time of economic uncertainty. So we offer contactless drop-offs and contactless installations. Not even a pandemic has been able to halt my passion to do what I love.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As a parent of a child with special needs, I felt like I had two options; look for a job with the risk of being fired again or reduce my time in the workforce. I didn’t like either option because it would have a negative impact on my income. Here’s where the idea of starting my own business came about. Initially, the thought of starting a business seemed daunting. But I knew it would help me gain the flexibility needed to earn money while attending to my child’s needs. Once I started my business it took time to find balance between running a successful business and raising a family. But I’m very big on planning ahead so that I can give my business and my children the attention they need. I know the mompreneur path I chose won’t be easy so whenever I get thrown off track, I remain calm and give myself the grace to start fresh the next day.
