We recently connected with Brittany Taplin and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany , thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve always experimented with my own hair , coloring it funky colors and having different cuts/styles but i had a new client come along; now friend who happened to be a recording artists (at the time i was doing hair on the side , like sew-ins mostly at this time) – courtnie would just get sew-ins at first until one day she says i need curls but i’m going to need them to last for tomorrow because i’m shooting a music video. I pinned those curls up and prayed they would look nice the next day as i wasn’t going to be there. We were just starting out so we didn’t know the proper way to go about a production..at least i didn’t know haha
The hair turned out okay, you got the vibes for the video for the most part but i told her the next videos i need to be there.; i have not missed a video yet haha after the first came the second and third video but it was the fourth music video that made me realize this is was the avenue in hair that i enjoy the most and could see myself doing it for a living.
it was the biggest set yet that we had put together, i did courtnies hair and the talents hair in the video. Its called “what’s up” by courtnie ….but my favorite part was that it was somewhat of a period piece , style wise …and i was able to tap into that time period to style the hair looks for the video.
Brittany , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a hairstylist and creative professional with a passion for transforming hair into art! My journey into this industry began with my fascination with hair extensions and add-ons at a young age. All the woman in my life would rock elaborate hairstyles. From a young age, I was drawn to the world of beauty and fashion, experimenting with different hairstyles and techniques. I had finger waves and a curly sew-in in the back for my elementary graduation lol ; From there i would do my friends hair and my own, would take cosmetology in high school for 2 yrs as well and then decide to go to school for fashion lol.
It wasn’t until i met my friend Courtnie, where i would be introduced to other creatives and exposed to the possibilities of where doing hair could take me. from there i started following other hairstylists in the industry on Instagram.
A hairstylist named andrita would then post to her stories that she was creating a roster of hairstylists who would like to assist on various different jobs. I asked to be added of course and then i received my first email to assist; one of the top hairstylists right now and for a 2 day campaign. I couldn’t believe it, that was a top tier moment for me. I continued to assist and would assist on different types of sets to see which i liked most.
I’ve had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients, from everyday individuals to celebrities and models. My style lies in creating personalized looks that not only complement my clients features but also reflects their unique personality and style. cuts, color, styling for special events, and editorial shoots, I love pushing the boundaries of my creativity in hairdressing.
What i think sets me apart from others in the industry is my dedication to continuous learning in the industry and find new ways to bring forth innovation. I’m constantly staying updated on the latest trends as best as possible lol, techniques, and products in hair styling, Allowing me to offer my clients a variety of services.
I’m most proud of the of the type of sets iv been apart of, community and my fellow hairstylists i’ve met over the years and the positive influence I’ve had on people to want to pursue their own hair career.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
One aspect of the creative journey that non-creatives may struggle to understand is the constant battle with self-doubt and the pressure to constantly innovate and produce original work. Creativity is not always a straight forward process, and there are often moments of uncertainty and insecurity along the way.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One of my goals driving my creative journey is to inspire others through my work. Whether I’m creating a fly hairstyle for a client, producing content for a photo shoot, or sharing insights and knowledge. I want to inspire other creatives.
My mission is to leave a lasting impact and contribute to the beauty industry in any way i can, doing so my own way while celebrating diversity and inclusivity.
