Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Steele. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brittany, appreciate you joining us today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
my first real experience outside of school working on clients was during one of my externships when I worked at a small spa. I would come in and work for a few hours each week, and I was able to take on clients by myself, which was nice. The owners really helped me with my technique and interacting with paying client and making sure that I made product suggestions so that we could upsell the service and get the client on a good regimen. I remember I did my initial facial on the owner and I was doing lymphatic drainage on her face and I think I was so nervous when I was doing it, so I was kind of rushing through it and afterwards she told me that was nice. It felt really good but you need to go slower so that the client can really enjoy the moment and not feel like you’re rushing. And because I wanted to make sure that I gave the best service each and every time , I really had to take a step back and think about what she said and then apply it. So now when I’m doing facials, I have to remember to calculate all of my time accordingly, depending on what the client skin needs if I’m going to focus much more on the massage or if we have extensive extractions to do, I’m not avoiding massaging that area.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
i’m a Los Angeles native. Born and raised. I initially got into skincare because one of my friends told me that I needed to do lashes in order to make money and I was working as paralegal at that point, so I thought you know what let me go ahead and look into this. I found out that in order to do it full-time and legally I had to go to school to become an aesthetician so I stopped working at my Law job and started esthetician school. I realized that they did not teach Lashes in school lol. I fell in love with skincare, and took a lash course and that’s how I was making my money during school. now I specialize in lash extensions, lymphatic, drainage, facials, jet plasma, body contouring, and waxing. I absolutely love what I do, and I absolutely love the fact that I am able to make my clients feel good about themselves by giving them amazing services.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
my faith in God been the most helpful for me succeeding in this industry. You will have very high highs and you can experience some low lows. There are going to be some slow days, some slow weeks, some slow months, and you have to remain faithful that no matter what, God is going to come through. When you are starting out as a small business owner, and you get a no call no-show on the books, and that is all that you had booked for that day, you’re going to definitely be calling on the Lord.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
An all-time favorite of mine is The Game of Life, and How to Play it by Florence Scovel. The book is very well written in a way that gives you enough analogies to understand the lessons of life. It’s not a game it’s not a book on how to game or swindle anyone. The title is a little deceiving, but it is definitely worth a read or a listen so that you can better understand how to navigate through life when situations get tricky.
