We were lucky to catch up with Brittany “Soul” Sharp recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Brittany thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am grateful. I like to view myself as a “Corporate Creative”, a term I use that refers to us with Corporate Jobs, while we pursue our Creative & Musical Careers – no matter what. I have chosen to utilize my job, education, and life experiences to leverage my Creative Arts endeavors. I believe they all work together. After all, I am a holistic being.
When asked if I would choose one over the other, I can say that, in this present space, I enjoy the freedom in being able to make the impact I have via my art, while also appreciating the freedom of being able to take a family day away from the crowds sometimes.
Should the day come where I am able to completely sustain my family, goals, and dreams without the commitment to a corporate job…well, I’ll tell you how I feel about it when it happens. I’m excited about that.
Perspective is everything.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I love what I do. But I am most happy about being who I am. What I mean is, I bring who I am to what I do. I believe life is often more smooth when your brand embodies the values and beliefs that are important to you. Less gimmicks to try and keep up with.
I am a versatile Songwriter, Author, Speaker, Performer & Recording Artist. I enjoy infusing music, of various genres, with spoken word during live performances, & recordings. I bring sound and silence together in unique ways; and my personality and faith are woven into each performance whether live or recorded.
I also make an impact as an inspirational speaker, host, workshops facilitator, actress and so many other creative vehicles.
I’m most fulfilled when I am in a space covertly or overtly sowing an edifying messages into the hearts, minds of souls of others.
That brings more value to the 13 awards (currently nominated for a fourteenth) I’ve had the honor of receiving for enriching the communities around me in my city, state and region.
My premise is healing with the arts, I’m passionate about Love and I believe growing my brand is merely sowing these things into our culture. One song or Poem at a time.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Resilience is a word I know all too well. Many know me as a multi-awarded creative, poet, singer/songwriter, Author, some say “local celebrity” in Las Vegas. However, what most people don’t know is I’ve at a point endured a season of homelessness. My story is a more complex one than most people know, especially, because I tend to be an optimistic and upbeat person. During those several months of transition, I attended every engagement, gig, or performance I’d already agreed too, regardless of my circumstances. One month I did six gigs in eight days and then went back to the Airbnb or Hotel I was staying in. Not because I was on tour, but because due to the restrictions with the pandemic, I didn’t have a lease.
A million stories I could tell you about my relationship with tenacity and resilience, but what I will say is here are some things I learned during that specific season of my life:
1. Do not focus on what you do not have, Focus on what you do have. What do you have access to?
2. Have an attitude of gratitude vs. entitlement. (I’ve given, helped, and sacrificed for many – but what helped me forgive is that I took ownership of my own healing. Game Changer.
3. Be Strategic. (And the Less resources you have, the More Strategic you need to be)
4. Have Faith. I have faith in Yahweh/God, but whatever or whoever you have faith in – lean into them when facing times that are warm & fuzzy, as well as, the cold & prickly.
5. Strive to be as honorable as possible.
6. Remember your Why, even if the How changes.
7. Do Everything in Love.
8. You are Stronger than you think.
9. Make it a point to Learn & Grow. Do not wait for someone to do that for you.
10. Get out into Nature, when you can.
Have you ever had to pivot?
In 2016, an organization ended up closing the door to the office in which I was in a Leadership role. I had a choice to go to school to plug away at my Degree or Real Estate School. I was convinced I could do both starting with Real Estate and spent the next year or so being a Full Time Real Estate Agent & a Full Time Performing Artist. Some months Real Estate paid the bills, others – Entertainment. I enjoyed that experience and had a sense of support during the time to pivot appropriately.
At this time, 2023, I’m reactivating my Real Estate license after spending some time off the market; and refining and strategically relaunching my Entertainment business. All while working a Corporate Job, being a Mother, preparing myself to be someone’s future wife (presently single), and learning to balance holistic health. I make time for nature walks, I spend time with God in great landscapes or on my balcony during sunsets, I make time for ME. And that goes a long way – especially, with all that I aim to accomplish in my life.
Life is about balancing, strategizing, reprioritizing, and Being.
