We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittany Singleton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
July 2020, during the peak of the pandemic, was the birth of B’s Passion Flavors, LLC. Who knew selling wings out of my small apartment just to pay rent for the next month to get by, would turn into a small business? My vision started to come to reality. Cooking was always a hobby for me. During the pandemic, I enjoyed cooking new dishes and creating different wing flavors. Creating those dishes gave me the vision to start my small business and to share my dishes with the Charleston community.
Brittany, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Born and raised in Downtown Charleston, SC, I never thought I would make it to where I am now. I was raised by my great-grandmother, Irene Singleton, grandmother, Yvette Williams, and my mother Cheketa Singleton.
Growing up, I was the black sheep of the family, an outcast, but being the outcast gave me the motivation, and the drive to keep pushing forward. My family rarely supported any of the goals I’ve accomplished thus far, it really discouraged me, but I had to push through and I’m proud to say that I admire my strength and passion.
I graduated from South Carolina State University, on May 8, 2015, where I obtain my bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering technology. A year later, I gave birth to a handsome baby boy, Gerald Burns III; and this is where it all began. After giving birth to my son, I made a promise to myself that I WILL become successful to create a better life for my son and me. I later got accepted into The Citadel Graduate College, where I studied civil engineering with a concentration in structural engineering, I will obtain my master of science degree in the Fall of 2024.
Being a single parent was never in my plans but God never makes mistakes. My son gave me the extra strength I needed to not give up. Fast forward to 2020, Covid hit, layoffs were being made and of course, I was one of the individuals. Working for one of the leading private engineering firms in South Carolina as a Staff Professional; took a huge toll on me financially and mentally, but I knew I had to keep moving forward.
From there, B’s Passion Flavors, LLC was born. Becoming a business owner was the best decision I’ve ever made. My small business branched off successfully and currently building to expand !
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Communication and connecting with numerous of business owners. Being connected with the RIGHT individual in the business industry will take you further than having a pocket full of money! Communication is key!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Becoming a business owner showed me the old habits I had to fully let go of in order to succeed. I often would worry about what others thought of me, I doubted myself a lot because I felt as though I wasn’t good enough to accomplish my goals because I didn’t come from a wealthy family or I wasn’t popular to start a business; I let fear get in the way of my plans and hesitated to start my business or any goals I set for myself.
What I’ve learned from being in the business industry for almost 3 years, is that no matter what individuals say, no matter what negative thoughts may occur in your mind; always remember to put your best foot forward and keep God first in EVERYTHING you do.
