Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Selmants. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brittany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I have always had a passion for creating – when I was younger I would take art classes after school, and I went on to study fashion in college. I bought a Cricut a few years before my wedding and used to to make crafts here and there, then really enjoyed it and knew I wanted to make fun projects for all of my own wedding festivities. After, I asked friends and family if they wanted some fun signs for their own life events, and I enjoyed doing it so much that I knew I could start a business making signs! I’m super organized and passionate, which I think helped get me to where I am today.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I first started making wedding signs in 2021, after my own wedding and realizing how much I enjoyed it! I started by making fully custom signs for couples – but soon realized, what is happening to those signs after their wedding? In 2022, I rebranded to what Bespoke by Britt is today, a sustainable signage company. I now offer wedding signage rentals (which are semi custom – the bases are as-is but the wording text/colors are customizable) and fully custom hand-cut wood signs. This provides two great options for couples – really cool rental signs that make a statement (and require little effort on their part!), or a totally unique heirloom sign that they will enjoy for many years to come – all while being eco-conscious.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Time. It’s incredible how long it takes to learn a craft. How many mistakes you make. How much money you spend correcting those mistakes. In today’s world, it’s really hard for non-creatives to understand how much time, energy, and money of our own creatives have invested to perfect their craft. With mass-production and companies like Amazon, people often think hand made items are so expensive. You have to think though – you aren’t just paying for that item, you’re paying to support that person’s craft and allow them to continue doing it by purchasing something from them.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
In what I do – I love being a part of one of the most important days of peoples lives! Although it’s just signs, they specifically chose to work with me because they liked my style and wanted to fit it in with their day. For the custom signs I make – those are so special because they will remain with the couple forever. It’s so fun to be a part of someone’s life!
