We were lucky to catch up with Brittany Sanders recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I have been captivated by cameras for as long as I can remember. My first camera was given to me when I was 6 years old, and I haven’t put cameras down since! I started professionally shooting weddings, family + lifestyle sessions, and engagements almost 3 years ago. To be honest, I struggled immensely when I first started my business. It takes so much time & energy to create a portfolio of your work, to build clientele, to learn the ins and outs of owning a business, and to create a brand for yourself. I have put blood, sweat, and tears into creating my business, and that is why I love & appreciate my business so much. I mean, what other job lets you document the best day of people’s lives? Mine does, and I’m beyond grateful for my clients that have supported me in so many ways.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Brittany Sanders, and I am a portrait & wedding photographer based in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I began my journey as a photographer at a very young age, and as a photography business owner 3 years ago. it is easily the best decision I have ever made. I originally started out capturing families and individuals through creative portraiture, and I now am a multi-published, award-winning wedding photographer that gets to travel the world. I have such a love for documenting priceless memories on wedding day, and getting to meet beautiful couples all over the world. Truly, I never thought I could love a career as much as I do, and I really think that sets me apart from other photographers.

Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
I almost had an absolute nightmare happen to me at the first wedding I shot! My old camera malfunctioned twice, and I had no clue how to effortlessly pose clients like I do now. To say I was nervous would be an understatement. It was finally time for a toast to the new couple, and I wanted to take portraits of the couple because the lighting was perfect. I took the photos, started backing up to take a photo from farther away, and almost knocked their wedding cake over!! I was so embarrassed, but the couple was so sweet and laughed it off. Note to self: watch where you’re going!

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
When I first started shooting weddings, I worked with Ramon Flores (another wedding photographer) to build my wedding portfolio, become more comfortable with posing couples, and to understand the flow of general wedding itineraries. I learned so much from him, and I don’t think I would be as known today if he hadn’t taken me under his wing. You can find him on instagram @flores.photography.llc
