We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittany O’Dell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
My family had always dreamed of me earning a college degree, but by my third year, I realized that path wasn’t fulfilling my own aspirations. That summer, I secretly applied to culinary school, and when I returned home, I broke the news that I wouldn’t be going back to college. Instead, I was pursuing my passion for baking. Though my family was initially shocked, they eventually embraced my decision, especially when I started bringing home delicious cookies and pastries.


Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
After finishing culinary school, I immediately set out to find jobs creating specialty and boutique baked goods for weddings, birthdays, graduations, and other special events. During this time, I established many great relationships with my clients and enjoyed repeat business with great enthusiasm and joy. It is an honor to bring my clients beautiful and delicious baked goods for their special events. I am proud that I’ve created a business that provides unique, tailored desserts and pastries. What sets Britt Bakes apart from the competition is my commitment to delivering baked goods tailored to each client’s needs, with creative details that offer unexpected delights.


What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building strong relationships with my clients and enjoying repeat business has been incredibly rewarding. Plus, my Instagram page has been a huge hit, showcasing my skills as a baker and visually capturing the magic of my creations.


Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One week, I faced my most challenging order yet: a prestigious event required a fifteen-layer cake and another event that needed 379 intricately designed cookies, each to be individually packaged. The sheer scale of the order could daunt any baker, but I was determined to rise to the challenge.
I woke up at 2 AM with a clear plan and a calm demeanor. I tackled the towering cake first. Layer by layer, I meticulously assembled it, ensuring each tier was perfectly aligned. As I smoothed the final layer of icing, I allowed myself a moment of satisfaction before moving on to the cookies. Each cookie required a unique design, reflecting the event’s theme. Despite the mounting pressure and the ticking clock, I remained composed. I surprised myself with my cool, calm demeanor!
By the time the sun began to set, I had completed the mammoth task. The cake stood tall and majestic, and the cookies, neatly packaged, were ready for their journey. When the clients received their order, they were in awe. The cake was a showstopper, and the cookies were a delightful treat.
My ability to stay cool under pressure had once again ensured everything was delivered fresh and on time, giving my clients peace of mind. Being able to do something so physically and mentally demanding makes me feel like I can accomplish anything!
