We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittany Nacole Ford a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany Nacole, appreciate you joining us today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
My business is larger today than when I first started. I have been fascinated with the hair industry for my whole life. I knew that I wanted to be a Hair Stylist because I simply LOVE what I do. After completing cosmetology school and passing the state board to obtain my cosmetology license, business started to boom! While most people who are hairstylist don’t have the proper paper work to legitimately operate, I knew that that was what I needed to continue to succeed. Professionalism, customer service, education on the human body, skin, hair, and nails provided me with the tools to access and service my clients correctly. I am also able to educate them on their hair and the best care options.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been intrigued by beauty and hair styling for my whole life. I have always been the one “doing hair”. My friends can go back and reminisce on me doing their hair in the locker room after school, them coming to my home to get serviced because they liked how I did my hair. I can go back as far as elementary school with the clients that I have now. I knew that my passion for the beauty industry was going to take me far because I believed in myself and also have had a great support system. Deciding to go to cosmetology school and finish was one of the best investments for me. I was then State board certified, which allows me to legally provide safe and beautiful services for my clients. My favorite styles to provide are silk presses, Bob cuts, knotless braids, and feed in braids.I only use professional and quality products on my clientele. Being able to educate my clients on how to grow their hair and keep their hair healthy is what makes me proud. If it’s not healthy for your hair I will not provide the service. I think that is one of the things that set me apart from others. I think that my work shows that I love what I do. I love to see my clients happy and returning. My next goal is to return to school and obtain my educators license.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience on social media by being consistent. With every service I am sure to be neat and not rush. With every client I consult with them to assure that the style that chose can be obtained. Every style is not for every client. Before, pictures were very popular, now reels have taken over the social media industry. For anyone who is starting out, I would say always do your best work, take pictures with good lighting, a clean camera lens and a confident client. That is a winning combination.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What helped me build my reputation in this market is my relationships and how I treat everyone that I encounter. I am honest, kind, and I treat people fairly. If I can not complete a style to my best ability I will not take your money. I believe that it is important to provide an experience for my clients. A clean and safe environment, their choice of music or movie, snacks, and water. I have a nice background for content. People love to get an experience that they will remember and makes them feel good about doing business with me.
