Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Kidd. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brittany, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Has Covid resulted in any major changes to your business model?
I would say Covid forced me to refine my business model while teaching me how to adapt quickly and efficiently. Allow me to elaborate.
I started my two businesses and nonprofit in September of 2019 with two business partners. After starting to gain traction in the industry and making important connections with some of the top owners/influencers and taking out two loans- Covid hit and shut down events in March 2020. My business partners had to walk away for their family and health, so I was left with everything on my shoulders and no events to plan or vend at. I thought my world was over. But with all my free time, I taught myself photoshop and worked on my websites and kept myself slightly above water. I am now up for two awards in my industry and was asked to be a business partner in the food industry and that business has taken off exponentially. Now I’m back to doing events and I still have influence in my original industry. So even though Covid tried to break me, all it really did was craft more of my skills and allowed me to offer more business services and make more connections online.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have an event planning & graphic design business named Boutique 5150. I have a nonprofit named The 5150 Social Club that promotes mental health services and community outreach programs and a food cart named Prison Pies that sells prison inspired crops straight from the commissary.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Although people have tried to ruin my reputation almost since day one, I think what has made me rise above all the hate is my ability to still stay strong and willing to work with anyone and give them advice on being successful. I have worked with a lot of people – especially women in my industry, and I know I’ve taught them how to be successful, even if they chose to part ways with me or take my ideas as their own. I can’t stay mad, because we both know they wouldn’t be where they are without me, and that’s good enough in my eyes.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is seeing my creativity be shared on multiple platforms. I hear the slogan I came up with for my food cart repeated numerous times throughout a 4 hour event and get tagged in multiple pictures of people posing with my graphic designs for my businesses. It makes me feel good to know people appreciate my art. Especially since I’m self taught
