Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Johnson-Murray. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brittany , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, one thing many business owners consider is donating a percentage of sales or profits to an organization or cause. We’d love to hear your thoughts and the story behind how and why you chose the cause or organization you donate to.
I am the founder of the swimwear brand Miakalani Swim. Beyond just creating stylish swimwear, I have a passion for helping animals in need. A portion of the profits from our sales go towards supporting sick, abused, and neglected animals in Jamaica. Funds go towards vet bills, boarding, food and much more. My love for animals led me to create an Instagram page called @kittiesofkingston, where I showcase my rescue efforts and raise awareness about the plight of animals in need. Through my dual commitment to swimwear fashion and animal welfare, I try to demonstrate dedication to making a positive impact in both the fashion industry and the lives of all animals I encounter.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Brittany Johnson-Murray, the creative force behind this brand, and I’m thrilled to share my story with you.
Born and raised in the heart of Kingston, Jamaica, I’ve always been deeply connected to the beautiful island that inspires my designs. From the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean to the lush tropical landscapes, the colors and textures of Jamaica have been my muse since day one.
Growing up, I discovered my love for art and creativity, and it didn’t take long for me to realize that fashion was my true passion. It all started when I was 21 years old and decided to try my hand at making a dress. To my amazement, the dress received an overwhelmingly positive response, igniting a spark within me. It was then that I knew I had found my calling.
With newfound determination, I honed my skills, combining my artistic flair with a keen eye for detail and design. I sought to create swimwear and resort wear that not only encapsulated the natural beauty of Jamaica but also embodied the soul and spirit of the island. It wasn’t long before Miakalani Swim was born.
At Miakalani Swim, we take pride in producing the highest quality swimwear and resort wear pieces, handcrafted with love and precision. We believe in celebrating the uniqueness of every individual, and our designs are thoughtfully crafted to accentuate your natural beauty and make you feel confident, comfortable, and stylish whether you’re lounging by the pool or sipping cocktails on the beach.
Our commitment to quality extends to the fabrics we use, as we believe that the best results come from the best materials. We carefully select premium fabrics that not only feel luxurious against your skin but also withstand the elements and the test of time. Each piece is a testament to our dedication to excellence.
Miakalani Swim is more than just a brand; it’s a celebration of the Jamaican culture, a tribute to the creative spirit, and an embodiment of the island’s warmth and vibrant energy. Every piece is designed with love and handcrafted with care to bring a piece of Jamaica to your wardrobe.
Thank you for joining me on this incredible journey. I invite you to explore our collection at MiakalaniSwim.com and experience the essence of Jamaica through Miakalani Swim
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
We do all our manufacturing in Kingston, Jamaica. When I first started the brand, I personally sewed every piece myself and even to this day I still sew many of the pieces myself. However, as we’ve grown, I’ve been able to hire other manufacturers to help keep up with customer demand. It wasn’t easy finding the right ones – it took a lot of trial and error and wasted fabric. Now, I’ve got a great team of seamstresses who help me create both our swimwear and resort wear.
One thing I’ve learned is that finding reliable workers isn’t always easy. Good communication is key, and so is making sure everyone’s fairly compensated. I find that once I build a report with my seamstresses, they are happy to do the work and are just as focused on the quality of each piece as I am, and I couldn’t ask for anything more.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I wouldn’t characterize this as a lesson per se, but rather as a common challenge that many entrepreneurs face: the infamous Imposter Syndrome. When I first started out, I never imagined I could accomplish what I have today. From sponsoring numerous pageants, appearing on Smile Jamaica a few times over the years, designing Monday Wear pieces for various carnival bands, to securing multiple stockists in Jamaica and Europe and displaying in hotels on the North coast of Jamaica, the journey has been riddled with doubts. However, I’ve had to cultivate resilience, pushing through the feelings of being an imposter and developing a stronger belief in myself and my capabilities.
