Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brittany Hill-Whitehead. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brittany, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Having experienced racial inequality in my lifetime in regard to my wellness and healthcare as a woman, mother and black American I know it exists in the American healthcare systems. This includes the natural holistic and alternative wellness field. Minorities have a long history of distrusting doctors and practitioners because of exclusion and access to affordable quality options especially in underserved and oppressed communities. This has left a population of minorities in the United States with emotional and physical traumatic experiences around their wellness options and terrible experiences. I am an advocate for diversity and inclusive accessible natural medicine education and services that often are more affordable and can work in conjunction to western medicine practices to benefit the patients mind, body and soul and quality of life. It’s my life mission to change the stigma and lack of education surrounding holistic health in this country. Many options that should be available to our communities no matter what are actually rooted in practices that come from cultural healing traditions lost from years of oppression. I have started my mission by bringing together healers of all backgrounds, especially minorities to uplift each other in the quest for holistic equity for all.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am proud to offer affordable classes and mentoring services to teens, adults and gifted children, teaching subjects ranging from Reiki Certification to different intuitive holistic and healing subjects. I enjoy doing group readings, house blessings, hosting retreats, holistic events and teaching classes centered around holistic healing, and wellness practices. I am an everyday advocate against domestic violence and have worked closely with the Center for Women and Children by donating a portion of my proceeds from my healing services to them throughout the year along with offering discounted services to the community. I co-own the Holistic and Spiritual based company, Magnetic Blue with my daughter where they focus on creating products that offer healing energy to your soul. I also co-owns Aura Art Healing a Holistic Visual Arts Service with Los Angeles based Artist Tasha Grimes. Currently I also manage a business Incubator in Louisville using insight and Life Coaching experience guiding others to their dreams! This really complements the work I do supporting equity because we focus on Black and Latinx businesses. The Incubator also focuses on business development, mental wellness, fostering economic growth and education centered around creating generational wealth. Currently there are 34 businesses in the year long cohort. Being a part of an ecosystem that encourages entrepreneurship in places that haven’t existed before has added to the inspiration I have as an entrepreneur myself.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started growing my online platform as most did during Covid. Although I already had years of experience communicating with clients from my work history in business development via video. I had to find my sweet spot in connecting with my own customer base. I started off worried about being perfect in my delivery and presentation while connecting with people, soon after I realized that consistency and authenticity of the message, I wanted to deliver trumped everything else. Getting on social media live just to connect with my customers was key for me, it was the intention of my messages that resonated most, not the attention most are hoping to get in order to reach more people. I challenge everyone who is trying to build their customer base to connect with people directly even online via video or zoom if you can’t in person and be consistent about it. If you do this at least once a week and you will find that people will appreciate that, pictures and ads, and long-winded posts sometimes are just not enough.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
You can’t help everyone no matter what business you are in. This was hard for me because in my profession helping others is a core part of who I am and what I do. I was over “yessing” people when I was stretched thin and trying to accommodate everyone, I thought being new meant I had to take as much opportunity as I possibly could. This led me to be burned out and not as effective as I should have been at times. Not all opportunity is necessary to take. Just because you can do everything doesn’t mean you should. You have to set boundaries when developing yourself as an entrepreneur it’s imperative to have a plan and focus on the execution of that plan. Also seeking mental health wellness is a must, being an entrepreneur can be stressful, and overwhelming. Practicing good self-care habits is imperative! I encourage all entrepreneurs to seek someone to talk to that keeps your wellness a priority.
